the PS3 is still the better deal but yet if people dont want to be able to play video games as well as Blu-ray movies it is cheaper for them to buy a stand alone player.

If I didn't already have a 360 and Wii, I would definitely go for a PS3 as a great gaming/Blu-ray combo. But I really need a low-temp, low-power, quiet player that can replace my DVD player (I don't have enough space left for something the size and shape of a PS3).
The other issue for me is the power wasted using a PS3 as a movie player... standalone Blu-ray players probably use a lot less power for just watching movies.
So, even though the PS3 may be the ultimate "blu" machine, it's not necessarily the answer for everyone.

Have you seen the new models power consumption?

Yes. Here's a link from 8/23/2008: http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/23/new-80gb-playstation-3-provides-minimal-power-savings-might-hav
According to the article, the new PS3 used >100 watts for playing games and a similar amount during movie playback.
Here is a link to a Panasonic Blu-ray player... 27 watts.
