Forums - Sales - Price Cuts on Blu-ray Players at WalMart

Glad to see things like this. Expect a crazy doorbuster deal of $250 or maybe even $200 on some clearance players this Black Friday.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

he doesnt understand the cost of aluminum heat pipes... the cooling system of the PS3 even with 3 pipes is still about $30. The original cooling system with 8 pipes was probably about $70.

I completely understand the costs involved ...

I'm also aware that a company that sold Millions of consoles with the PS2, PSP and PS3 as well as tens of millions of games for those systems is barely profitable.

Nice. There goes the "blu-ray is still too expensive and isnt getting cheaper" arguement people use for why ps3 cant get a price cut.

Well, that is only one component of the entire peice and if it needs to be $250+ to make $$ then you need to add probably at least another $150 for the rest of the stuff and WHOA!!!!! right back at the current $400 price.

i.e. no price cut coming.

in a way there was a price cut in the form of an upgrade. 40GB -> 80GB is about a $5 difference and 80GB -> 160GB is about  a $20 difference. Grant it that the upgrades are basically fictional since dropping 2 heat pipes and the CELL's size plus power suuply and motherboard shrinks amount to about maybe $100 is savings but still Sony has breathing room now for a price cut after the holidays which would be the smartest thing to do since they are trying to make a profit and a price cut before the holidays would be a retarded idea.

Now people won't need to buy Ps3s as Blu-Ray players?

the PS3 is still the better deal but yet if people dont want to be able to play video games as well as Blu-ray movies it is cheaper for them to buy a stand alone player.

If I didn't already have a 360 and Wii, I would definitely go for a PS3 as a great gaming/Blu-ray combo.  But I really need a low-temp, low-power, quiet player that can replace my DVD player (I don't have enough space left for something the size and shape of a PS3).

The other issue for me is the power wasted using a PS3 as a movie player... standalone Blu-ray players probably use a lot less power for just watching movies.

So, even though the PS3 may be the ultimate "blu" machine, it's not necessarily the answer for everyone.

Have you seen the new models power consumption?

That's what I've been saying. This year we will probably see no cut, but in March or so, there is a great possibility.

Hopefully Blu-Ray will pick up then.

Its still apparently a disaster Sony should never have got involved with.

For those that want the  ability to play games as well as have a great Blu ray player, which is still considered to be one of the best players available even 2+years after Blu started, the consumer should just buy a PS3.

As far as the portion of your comment talking about how a price cut in one will negatively affect the other, i.e. the substition affect, Sony needs and should want the prices for the players to go as low as possible, b/c until Blu is a mass market thing, it won't make money from disc royalties, and the PS3's added bonus of having a BD drive in it, won't mean a thing.
