Forums - Nintendo - Gamespot reviews Mario Super Sluggers. 6.5

Lately, I've found myself hating Game Informer. They are the New York Times of Videogame magazines.

If Game Informer is the New York times of Videogame Magazines then that makes Game Informer the Video Game Magazine of record.  Maybe you want to redact that statement.

What do you prefer the Video Game Magazine equivilant of the New York Post or something?  Maybe Nintendo Power and Official Xbox Magazine would be more your style?

So it's actually better than Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn? Wow, awesome!

It never ceases to amaze me how that was rated so low (6.0).

Gamespot....don't follow their reviews literally. Or else, you wouldn't want any more than 3 Wii games in your life.

Ign: We wouldn’t go as far as to say this is Nintendo-made shovelware, but there's very little that has changed in the three years between "Mario Superstar Baseball" on GCN, and Mario Super Sluggers on Wii. 71

1 up: Super Sluggers succeeds and fails as most Mario sports games do. Its quick, arcade-style action is easy to get into and plenty fun, coming at the expense of the nuances -- and balance -- you'll find in a sim. 75

Nintendo Power: This baseball diamond loses some of its luster with occasionally confusing or clunky play (it's too easy to accidentally pitch or swing prematurely), but the game's simplified approach is great for sports-curious gamers looking to avoid the complexities of a real simulation. [Oct 2008, p.87]

GamesmasterUK: A step back for Wii baseball controls, but enough of a gameplay leap to warrant playing. [Sept 2008, p.70] 80.

To be honest, looking at the text of a lot of these reviews, they wanted to give it a lower score than they actually did. The controls do not please everyone.

Yes youre absolutely right all those sites wanted to give it a lower score, maybe the score the game deserved and thats in the 6.s range, but the fact that this is a nintendo game automatically gives it an extra point ot 2

Will you guys stop being so fanboyish to admit that this is an average game ,a  game that seems to be (from the reviews )worst then the gamecube version that was released years ago ,and as i see gaming reviews, average games get average scores not 7,s or 8,s like most first party average games tend to score, and this is in general not only for nintendo but also for sony and microsoft but for these 2 in a little less degree

There is no problem in liking games that score is the 6,s i have Viking batlle for asgard and that game got a 3 !!!!! from 1up and apart from some minor flaws the game is great but was trashed by critics not just 1up something that killed the game sales wise if mario super sluguers is an underated game what can i say about Viking

Nintendo fans need to wake up to the fact that all nintendo games get  inflated scores and thats a proven fact i own several nintendo games and love most of them but i can see there real value not let miself get clouded by fanboyism

Fire emblem didn't have Mii support. That's probably why this one beat it.

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS

I really wish lack of gamecube/classic controller support wasn't looked down on.

To be honest no game should support those control schemes, or if they do have some major disadvantage to it.

Those controllers ruin MK and SSBB.

They are Wii, games, make Wii only controls!

A part of me would cry withouth my Wavebird in SSBB, one the Wiimote side ways my middle finger keeps touching the B button so I do air dodges and block when I don't intend to, plus short hopping is near impossible with default mapping, and 1+2 means I may short hop but I may also just attack.

To be honest I thought Brawl would use motion controls... but it seemed designed for the GC controler... that's kind of why I don't give much credit at least not seriously to Sakurai.

I also agree with this, although it seems that many don't share our opinion.

Wiimote/Nunchuk is superior in Mario Kart Wii. SSBB is best played with the Gamecube controller though.

Have you forgotten to add it to your games page? Or did you play it at a friends house?

So if Gamespot doesn't like it, does that mean it is a good game?

That was my exact reaction as well. Gamespot hates anything expanded audience. Don't forget, they gave out the following scores: Wii Fit 7.0, Mario and Sonic 6.0, Carnival Games 4.5, Mario Party 6.5, Wii Play 5.4, and Wii Sports 7.8. Heck, even Guitar Hero III only received an 8.0. Since every one of those games has been monster sellers, it's clear that there's a disconnect between Gamespot and the Wii audience.

That said, I don't think Super Sluggers looks like a particularly good game. It will probably sell similarly to last year's Strikers Charged.

You saved me typing, lol. I didn't realize until I got BACK into console gaming how sheepish people are to game reviewers. It's bothersome to say the least.

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

So what if they sell well? Crap/mediocre games sell well all the time. I'd argue that most people who buy games like Wii Fit, Mario and Sonic, Canival Games, Mario Party and Wii Play don't read reviews and buy what they think looks fun or buy off the recommendations of friends.

Also, gamespot seems to be pretty in line with metacritic averages (since I know how much you all value average scores).

Game: GS Score(Difference from MC score)

Wii Fit: 70 (-10)

Mario and Sonic: 60 (-7)

Carnival Games: 45 (-11)

Wii Play: 54 (-4)

Wii Sports: 78 (+2)

They low-balled R&C:TOD way more than any of the games you listed.
