Forums - Gaming - Why are the Wii and 360 region locked?

Actually on the 360 region locking is a publisher choice. Some games are, some aren't...

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

You can also buy different cheeses from different countries worldwide.

It just isn't fair!

The Wii is because it isn't HD ... NTSC and PAL are two different display formats, and many elements of a game have to be tested and optimized for each

The Wii isn't region free to make sure that Europeans buy PAL copies of the games, because otherwise the long time of work for the translations would be a waste.

It already is. When shall I see Final Fantasy rlesed in Europe and the US on the same date? never, I think. And differences between NTSC FF and PAL FF? nonexistent. Releases? PAL 6 months after NTSC.

I think Rol is right about the wii being region locked in Others. I dont know about 360 though.

Also isn't the value of the U.S dollar pretty low compared to the currency of the Pal regions?

Actually, the PS3 is region locked. Most games aren't, though.

The PS3 is about as region locked as the 360.

The PAL FFs (at least up until FF X-2) suffered from huge black bars at the top and bottom of the screen and ran 17 % lower. Square-Enix was really lazy.

Yes, true. Any other differences? not really. Same game, same language, same bugs, lol. Releasing them with huge time diffs is pure lazyness or I don't know what.
