Also to people who want a good (not bad) survival horror, you should check :

Haunted Ground on PS2.

Anyone who likes this game but doesn't like Clock Tower will be a hypocrite (not talking about you, libellule)--Haunting Ground was going to be a Clock Tower game until they decided to alter the storyline.  Different story, same 'hide-from-the-maniac' gameplay.

Wasn't a fan of haunted gorund myself. It pissed me off that the dog has more brains than the girl...

Clock Tower was a MUCH better game, and there was no dog.  If you're a horror fan, you really owe it to yourself to go to a ROM site (no linking allowed, I know) and check it out, especially since it's free.  Oh, and DEFINITELY wear headphones

What about Clock Tower 3?

Regardless of what many people on here say, I consider RE4 and the upcoming RE5 to be survival horror. Lets see, it's a horror game and you're trying to survive. Yup, sounds like survival horror to me. Who says that a survival horror game has to be slow paced and limited ammo? I don't see why it can't be faster paced with more action. In my opinion, there can be variations of the genre. Look at fighting games for example. We now have mostly all 3D fighters where 15 years ago, it was all 2D. Despite that, they're still fighting games just like they were then but just different.

I could see how RE4 could disappoint fans of the older style ganes but I don't think that RE4 shouldn't be classified as survival horror because it's more action packed.

RE4 has much more in common with Gears of War than any classic survival horror game. I mean...in gears of war you are trying to "survive". Hell every game since beginning of time is based on you staying alive and not dying...

There are no compromises in survival horror. And there are aspecs which clearly take away fom the horror experience in RE4.

- The constant and silly dialoge between you and dozen people throughout the game using intercom (no sense of being alone hence not scary)

- The lack of "Wait, I can't blast my way through this?" gameplay ideas

- No puzzles what so ever

- Merchant which sells you any gun, health spray or ammo you may need

RE4 had scary parts, such as those creatures that regenerate. I actually found the scariest parts of the game are when you play with the presidents daughter and those knight armor things are chasing you...

However as a whole, the game is mostly a survival third person shooter...in the same way a mario game is a survival platformer.

I see what you're saying but at it's heart, RE4 is a horror based game. I don't think there is any "official" rules for what makes it survival. There are numerous types of horror movies whether it be slashers, ghost, monster, etc but when it comes down to it, it's a horror movie. I feel the same for RE4, it's obviously a horror game. So if anything, I'd call it a survival action horror game.

I don't mean any offense to anyone, it's just my opinion. I hope there is at least one thing we can all agree on- that RE4 on it's own merit is an incredible game.

"Survival action horror game" is a contradiction. Action indicates lots of fighting, and that is not what survival horror is about. The principal way in which survival horror actually leaves the player frightened is the complete imbalance between his character and the enemy. It needs lots of other elements, but this is the basis for the scares.

A lack of effective weapons, of ammo, of health items - these make you fear an encounter with the enemy. You can't fear that encounter if you're armed to the teeth.

RE4 can be simply called an action horror game, although as Disolitude said there are no more than a couple of scary parts.

And I wish I could agree with you but I personally don't think that it's an incredible game.

From what I've played of Fatal Frame IV it's scary as hell, so in pure scariness I'd give it AAA.

if you 3 years old maybe. :/

There's alot of New IP coming out - cursed mountain and alan wake

RE5 might go back to survival horror, or RE6 might

Alone in the dark seems to have been a waste of potential - maybe the next one

Arguing about the definition of survival horror is just retarded. Dead Space and RE4/5 are both horror games in a sense that they portray Zombies and or Horrific monsters and the game itself is meant to scare the player.

You people seem to think that the only survival horror game that fits your definition would be one that has no guns or fighting and you just run away from everything on screen until you get to the end of the level. Just because horror movies do this in just about every scene doesn't mean that video games need to follow suit.

So, am I the only person who finds it really interesting that the argument a lot of people are using on RE4 is the same that people use on popular Wii games?

Example:
"It looks like there aren't going to be anymore new survival horror games coming out ever"
"What about RE4?"
"That's not a REAL survival horror game. REAL games follow this really specific formula."

"It looks like there aren't going to be anymore new good games coming out ever"
"What about Wii Sports/Music/Animal Crossing?"
"Those aren't REAl games. REAL games follow this really specific formula."

Anyway, I'm glad that we are getting more 'fake' survival horror games like RE4 compared to 'real' ones like RE1-3. I used to own RE2 and I couldn't get past the very beginning. It was a terrible game. The controls sucked, and even if you got over the clunky as hell controls you would still never be able to kill anything because you only get like 3 bullets in the entire game. OTOH, I've beaten RE4 at least 3 times, and gotten all the extra unlockable stuff.

Wii has more 20 million sellers than PS3 has 5 million sellers.

Bu todays standards RE2 may be looked upon as bad but Resident Evil 2 did as much if not more for videogaming in general in 1998 than resident evil 4 ever will. If you don't see this then you either are new to gaming or are a younger dude...which is cool. I guess you had to be there back then to see it...

Took long enough for people to say Alan Wake.

Very excited for the game if it launches in '09.

And you have L4D, Dead Space, SH5 this year, and RE5 next year. So there are new IP's. They just are taking a more varied route than what we've seen with the SH/RE clones.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

As far as Silent Hill 2 goes, I just picked it up earlier this week and popped it in for the first time tonight. So far I think the game is trash. It has that asstastic control scheme that made the original Resident Evil games so much fun. And WTF is up with save points, the manual only describes them as mysterious red things.

Needless to say I played the game for about and hour, walked around with nothing to do but stare at fog and died without finding a save point. Now if I want to play it again I have to start over and walk around for another hour all while trying to find this mysterious red thing the manual doesn't even bother to show you a good picture of.

If this is your idea of a "true" survival horror game you can fucking keep it.

Fatal Frame 4 and Cursed Mountains look promising.

Who mentioned Dead Space? This is a simple Ego-Shooter not an survival Horror. And Alan Wait will be the first game for the next console generation.
