As far as Silent Hill 2 goes, I just picked it up earlier this week and popped it in for the first time tonight. So far I think the game is trash. It has that asstastic control scheme that made the original Resident Evil games so much fun. And WTF is up with save points, the manual only describes them as mysterious red things.
Needless to say I played the game for about and hour, walked around with nothing to do but stare at fog and died without finding a save point. Now if I want to play it again I have to start over and walk around for another hour all while trying to find this mysterious red thing the manual doesn't even bother to show you a good picture of.
If this is your idea of a "true" survival horror game you can fucking keep it.
