Wish we could get Mexico numbers to get total picture of the NA market

There's a discrepancy between this month's Canadian LTD & YTD compared to lastmonth's.

LTD: June / July = Difference

Wii: 986,200 / 1,060,000 = 73,800
360: 840, 700 / 870,000 = 29,300
PS3: 487,600 / 520,000 = 32,400

YTD: June / July = Difference

Wii: 318,000 / 376,000 = 58,000
PS3: 170,500 / 200,000 = 29,500
360: 129,000 / 154,000 = 25,000

PS3 & 360 can be explained by YTD being rounded off to 1k and LTD being rounded off to 10k, but it can't Wii difference. I'm going to use the YTD data as it's more accurate, but there seems to be a mistake in either this month's or last month's data. It's not a significant difference, but hopefully future numbers will show us where the mistake lies. If NPD had adjusted their numbers it should have affected the both LTD & YTD figures.

WTH, since when is Wii market leader in Spain? And it happened even faster than in Italy, since they've been market leader in that territory since like August.

Did I miss anything?

Looking at the LTD figures.

Canada buys about:

9% Wii consoles compared to the US (11.4 milion for July, NPD)
8% 360 consoles compared to the US (10.7 million)
10% PS3 consoles compared to the US (5.1 million)

Canada + US (July):
~Wii 12.46 million
~360 11.57 million
~PS3 5.62 million

Which mean VGchartz again undertracking PS3 by 120k if you include last two weeks.

If taking NPD's figures and the mexico figures as the norm.

The PS3 is undertracked by 161K for North America + 2 days of total North American sales + 7 months of Mexican sales. It can be assumed around 200K undertracked in comparison.

PS3 vs 360 sales

"The NPD Group says sales of gaming hardware, software and accessories was just under $920,000 through July, up 54 per cent over the same period last year."

Does this really make sense? If sales of just hardware were WII - 58k, 360 - 25k, PS3 - 30k, wouldn't this account for more than $920,000 already? Am I missing something?

It's a mistake, should be $920,000,000. It's a YTD total, not just July.

So it's selling more than sony is shipping? excellent logic

Console NPD USA NPD Can Mex est. total N.A VGC end July
Wii 11.40 1.06 0.30 12.76 13.43
PS3 5.10 0.52 0.08 5.70 5.52
X360 10.70 0.87 0.58 12.15 12.12

The Mexican estimate is based on BKKs Jan figures.

PS3 won't have sold much in S.A (officially, as it was only recently released there) so it actually looks close enough, perhaps a little low (say add 60k for the rest of central and South puts it 240k behind)

360 I would have thought has sold a little better in S.A officially, but I am not sure... so with a 200k figure for S.A it means X360 has been undertracked too, by around 230k

Wii is massively popular in central/S.A, but even that probably wouldn't makeup almost 700k... so perhaps 400k overtracked.... and yet Nintendo's fical for the end of June showed 13.11 million shipments to VGCs 12.73 million sales, to me a 380k difference seems large for a place you still struggle to find the consoles.... So IMO NPD has been undertracking the Wii rather than VGC overtracking.

What I wrote is what I wrote and clearly I didn't write that, so it must be your own logic.

July Canada Numbers

WII - 74k

360 - 29k

PS3 - 32k

WII - 376k YTD - 1,060k LTD
360 - 154k YTD - 870k LTD
PS3 - 200k YTD - 520k LTD

I think the July totals calculated by YTD is more accurate than the totals calculated by LTD are. YTD is rounded off to 1k, whilst LTD is rounded off to 10k. Wii has been averaging around 50k-60k this year, so I think the error more likely lies in the LTD totals.

YTD calculated July numbers:

Wii:  58,000
PS3: 29,500
360: 25,000

Sony said the PS3 is going to launch in Argentina, Columbia and Peru by March 2009

That's not really a good way to estimate Mexican sales from USA sales as the consoles weren't all available for the same period in both countries. It's better to get a percentage by comparing sales for the period each console was available in both countries. I did this previously and applied the percentages through June:

Using NPD & IDG data for the period when each console was available in both USA & Mexico we get:

360:

USA (NPD Feb 06 - Dec 07): 8,307,000
Mexico (IDG Feb 06 - Dec 07): 550,000
Mexico % of USA: 6.6%

Wii:

USA (NPD Nov 06 - Dec 07): 7,417,000
Mexico (IDG Nov 06 - Dec 07): 220,000
Mexico % of USA: 3.0%

PS3:

USA (NPD Aug 07 - Dec 07): 1,635,000
Mexico (IDG Aug 07 - Dec 07): 60,000
Mexico % of USA: 3.7%

Estimated YTD through June 08:

Wii: 100,000
360: 90,000
PS3: 60,000

Estimated LTD through June 08:

360: 650,000
Wii: 310,000
PS3: 120,000

You can apply the above percentages to July NPD for a slighly more up to date estimate.

I don't think PS3 has been officially released in South America yet.

Well there you go..... and it was only recently launched in Brazil correct? so my 60k figure is probably too high even for that.
