From what I've read, they can get BC up and running, except some moments can get choppy. For that they are having to get Cell on an individual game per game basis for the 25% or so of games that will be like that. It can be done.
Console Agnostic since 2001.
I've said since day one software BC would come.
It's nice to see them take the first step like this, applying it to just certain games. I've heard that emulating the emotion engine is quite a task on PS3's architecture, but as time goes on, surely those hurdles will be overcome, and software BC will come via a firmware upgrade.

I'm always amazed at these threads on PS3 BC.
That's because I never see any PS3 fan saying any of those:
- PS2 games look like shit on my HDTV
- graphics are PS2-like quality meaning very bad
- PS2 games hurt my eyes
- This is 2008, I can't stand these graphics anymore, HD is progress
Why is that?
I always expect to see PS3 owners battle between themselves, as a big vocal part can't stand SD, and another seems to want to play PS2 and *yuck* PS1 games at all costs, without it having any effect on them.
What Reeves meant was disk swapping to play Singstar PS2 songs on PS3.
What SONY will do to eventually add PS2 BC to newer PS3 models is create GS(PS2 GPU) emulation. Currently I imagine that the RSX should be able to handle most tasks the GS does -- it however does not have the 1mb video RAM embedded in it, which the GS has.
Once SONY manages to solve this problem they will then have to deal with PS2 games which do not 100% conform to PS2 development sidelines.
After that SONY would need extensive testing to be done on 60gb, 80gb and 40gb models to ensure that the Firmware doesn't hurt any of the older models of PS3 ... and after all that you would properly get 600 - 800 PS2 games working... or about 50% of all PS2 games...
I have no doubt SONY is working on doing this. However i also believe that SONY sees this as a minor issue and wants to get new features out first, as such i wouldn't expect any PS2 BC on 40gb models this year ...
The good lord giveth, and the good lord taketh away..........and then, the good lord giveth it back!!
BC should be inside PS3 in first place, after 2 years they still cant do it? Good they at least trying.
I tend to agree with Ookaze regarding last gen graphics.
I think mike_intellivision is correct that Sony is not announcing BC, but offering the ability to include PS2 singstar tracks if you are running the PS3 version of singstar.
Thanks for the input, Jeff.
Also, I wonder if this one source just got it flat wrong.
I cannot find anyone else reporting that the PS2 Singstar Disks will be playable as separate games. If this were the case, I somehow think it would be being reported elsewhere.
While I don't own a PS3, I would love for this to be true. But I feel that it is too good to be true.
