Forums - Gaming - Handheld RPGs: Reccomend me some games

For PSP: Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth was great if you missed that in the PS1 days. Crisis Core is solid. Brave Story and Valhalla Knights are okay, but a bit repetitive. Hardcore JRPG fans like you would probably get mild enjoyment out of 'em. Tales of the World. There's the FF1 and 2 remakes. The Star Ocean 1 and 2 remakes are coming soon.

I dunno if you're into the Japanese Strategy RPGs, but there are some fantastic ones on PSP: Disgaea, Jeanne D'arc, and Final Fantasy Tactics remake.

Edit: Puzzle Quest is an awesome hybrid RPG/Puzzle game that's on both systems.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

I dont have a DS(but want one for all the awsome FF remakes on it) but my recommendations for PSP are...
-Jeanne D'Arc for the PSP, an awe inspiring game with what I believe to be a really captivating story. The Gameplay is awsom SRPG tactics as well.
-Disgaea for PSP is great too. All the same humor you love from the original.
-Final Fantasy VII:Crisis Core is also an awsome game. If you dont fully know the story then this game will seem foreign to you. If you do then you will be just fine.
-Final Fantasy Tactics, enough said

Greatness Awaits

PSN:Forevercloud (looking for Soul Sacrifice Partners!!!)

The World Ends With You is the stupidest piece of shit I've ever played. Horrible story, horrible dialogue, horrible pacing, horrible style, and weird minigame gameplay with no strategy, but just timing your combos of taps and rubs. I think I might write a review of it soon.

If you want a good mix of great story and great gameplay, you want Final Fantasy IV and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. For GBA you can get FFVI and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

(Just like the FFs, The Mario & Luigi RPGs aren't exactly sequels, so the order you play them in doesn't matter, but I'd recommend Superstar Saga first anyway.)

If you want cruel grueling boring dungeoncrawling, Etrian Odyssey is good. I've heard Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja is good for this too, but I haven't played it.

If you want turn-based stategery RPG, Fire Emblems for the GBA are great.

I'd recommend FF1&2: Dawn of Souls for the GBA, since they let you save anywhere now, but those games play more like homework than fun now. If you're interested, the game's gotta be super cheap by now.

Plus a cast of Emo teens to boot, don't waste your money or time on it.

The actual bettery life on the DS lite is 12ish hours, 16 if you turn down the backlight. The PSP runs about 4 to 8 depending. Both consoles can use backup batteries.

The best RPGs on the DS are The World Ends With You, Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, and Final Fantasy IV DS. FFTacticsA A-2, Pokemon games, Etrian Odyssey 1/2, and Crystal Chronicles are also good, but not AAA imo. Before the end of the year, Chrono Trigger DS, and Disgaea DS will be released.

The DS is also BC, in which case you might wanna try out FFVI Advance, The Fire Emblem Games, or Golden Sun, amongst many other great rpgs.

As for RPGs, the PSP is only mildly behind atm, tbh, however, the console has a very poor future lineup of RPGs compared to the DS, and in about 5 months, it will be vastly behind. There is no arguing that point.

The DS is the current leader in great games imo, but at the moment that strength comes more from game selection than RPG lineup, as most of the larger RPGs we know about aren't released yet, but are only planned.

Suikoden, Tales of Hearts, Chrono Trigger, Dragonquest IX, Dragonquest Remakes, Kingdom Hearts, Disgaea, Fire Emblem DS, Sonic Chronicles, Master of the Monsters Lair, Rune Factory, Luminious Arc 2, Ash, Sigma Harmonics, Soma Bringer, and Valkyrie Profile to name a few. There is no question which console is the inevitable undisputed RPG king, and which has more rpg potential.

The PSP has an excellent action RPG, Final Fantasy Core Crysis, already out, but its future RPG lineup is questionable, and The World Ends With You, imo, is the better game, so it's up to the individual user to decide, as always.

However, let me say this, I believe that RPG fans that buy a PSP now instead of a DS, will regret that decision soon, and I've given my reasons why I believe this.

While I mostly agree with you, I think you underestimate the PSP's future thanks to it's new success in Japan. Some games to look forward to: Final Fantasy Agito XIII, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, Yggdra Union, Phantasy Star Portable and Parasite Eve: The Third Birthday. Not a huge list so far, but most are top class.

Hmmz depends on your taste though.  Star Ocean 1 and 2 are coming to the PSP and those games made me want to buy a PSP and others aswell (like lolita) and their are enough JRPG's coming to the PSP aswell later like FFXIII Agido, That tales game, FF dissedia,?? Etc....

DS will have more that for sure.  In my opinion they are both worth it.

This is so wrong it's not even funny. Considering two of the biggest upcoming PSP RPGs are Star Ocean 1 and 2, I don't think you should be naming the DS as chalk full of remakes.

The DS has the brighter future in regards to RPGs. If you can only choose one, I would choose the DS. However, the PSP is no slouch in the department either. What it lacks in the future is RPG support outside of Square Enix. The DS has Square, Level 5, Atlus, Nippon Ichi, Mistwalker and Namco in their corner. The PSP basically just has Square.

No it's not true the PSP is getting better RPGs. That is merely an opinion, and one most people don't share. The DS has RPGs locked for the forseeable future. I don't even think the mighty Wii will outperform the DS in RPGs across it's lifespan. The PSP, with it's lackluster software sales, has a slim chance of ever getting more RPG support than the DS. With more support, comes better support. Take away Square's PSP support and you have nothing but a GBA port. Take away Square's DS support and you have plenty left. There lies the difference.
