Forums - Gaming - Has your opinion changed on the PS3 - Post E3 / Leipzig?

The great thing about being a VG Chartz member and participating in these forums is the gamut of opinions from all sorts of audiences. Reflecting back on 2006 and now staring at the Fall of 2008, I'm going to ask  - "Would you reconsider  purchasing the Playstation 3 with its current offerings?"

Here are my thoughts:

I was a big critic of the PS3 when it came out and absolutely guffawed at the idea of it ever making a comeback.  However, my opinion has greatly changed.  The current price point is lower than ever ($399 for a 80gb SKU), unique-interestesting-genre defining games are coming in via the truckloads (Heavy Rain, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, Infamous, Fat Princess, Pixel Junk Eden.....), and an online interface that is slowly but surely catching up to Xbox Live in all forms of Ps and Qs.

*** I'm not saying the Playstation 3 is better than the 360 or that the Playstation 3 will be number one in terms of market share. I don't want to start a fanboy flame suit assault, but I'm asking you to quantify the worth of the console with its current price point and offerings and discuss!! What would you like to see?   What could push you over the edge to purchase the system?  Lets hear it!

Nope.

Good post.

Yeah...I'll probably end up buying a 160 Gig model when it's out.

I thought I could hold out on the second one until a slim model or something.

But why?  I was hoping to avoid one word answers.  What makes it an inplausible investment?  What would you like to see changed?

The PS3 to me always seems to be on the cusp of delivering something big - the big games always seem to be out next year - but it never actually seems to deliver it. Take for example, 2008, it was meant to be the year of the PS3 yet, so far to me at least, it's been dissappointing.

Maybe with the release of LBP, Resistance 2 and Home it'll finally deliver on it's potential for me.

I am largely platform agnostic. I fail to understand why some people get overly fanboyish about what is an inanimate piece of electronics that's obsolete even before it's launched, when there are far more important things to champion, such as preventing environmental destruction or preventing millions of people dying unnecessarily from illnesses. This fact however, doesn’t mean I am not someone who doesn’t enjoy gaming as a pastime (as I have done for the last 20 years) or doesn’t have a strong interest in how the market is evolving – hence my presence on this site.

Platforms owned – PC, DS, X-Box 360, PS3, PSP and Wii.

I remember buying the Playstation 3 and 360 at launch.  I'm one of the few odd ones who is very used to rolling with the punches.  The games library was unimpressive to me, up until I destroyed all my preconcepted notions of genres and actually played them.

When I finally beat Resistance (I hated it when I first got it, but than I actually played through it), Uncharted, Ratchet, Heavenly Sword, and MGS4 - I realized something.  The Playstation 3 games were of uber-quality and were doing very right.  The library is almost there, but once LBP and R2 come out, IF they hit the scale I want them to, I can see myself taking back my vicarious claims on the game's library.

MGS4 doesn't do it for ya, eh?

Anyhow... I already own a PS3, so it's not like GC would've made me want to buy one, but nonetheless, I'll say my opinion hasn't changed much.

I mean, really, nothing happened at GC that I care about. Yeah, I'm looking forward to Heavy Rain, but I still dont have much of a clue what it's about. All the other announcements, I could care less. Now, if they're gonna unveil Uncharted 2, then that'd be just flat out GG.

Although, I'd have to say, if I didn't already own a ps3, the 160 GB model makes it pretty tempting.

I originally didn't like the Playstation. It just didn't seem all that exciting to me. Then they released Ratchet & Clank and I read a little about Uncharted and Heavenly Sword. I got a little more interested in the games and then E3 happened this year (I had never seen an E3 before, although I heard about it a lot). This year, I was really excited by all of the videos that I saw for the games (In fact, I downloaded a couple of them because they were really well put together). Also, with all of the announcements lately, I've been beyond excited about all the innovative games coming out.

Also, I have to say that I admire Playstation for trying to come up with innovative ideas.

Same with me.  The more and more time is going on, I'm getting really pumped at the library of titles coming to the Playstation 3.  I think the biggest issue the Playstation 3 faces can be seen in other threads-

1.

Take this thread for example - http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=38136  - The OP, although she is 12 years old, clearly hates the Playstation 3 with vile disgust.  This all lends to price.  Since the younger gamers cannot afford Playstation 3s, they are opting to ignoree, and hence in turn hate it.  No matter what PS3 does, they will hate constantly.  Its a phenomona Sony should work on banifishing (which at GC we saw more LBP and the Eyepet game).

2.

The second issue is differentiating itself from Xbox 360.  The Multiplatform games will exist, but there needs to be an emphasis on ease of use and Playstation branding.  Many 360 owners in these forums don't see any difference beween PS3 and 360.

I believe that the PS3 and Sony are starting to really warm up to people's expectations going into next year.
