Forums - Gaming - Holy Shit imagine this in future games!

Ya well, I still think you've got the wrong idea...it's not like uber-realistic games will be the only games...and I think it's incorrect to compare ATHF and Venture Bros (two of my favorite shows) to realistic animation...I think you should compare it to a live action show.

Animation and live action are totally different. So all we have had for the past decades of gaming is the "animation" part...which is simply different than real life...because it's technologically impossible still.

But when it is possible...I am totally up for it. Imagine walking down a realistic city block, virtually indecipherable from real life, and being able to do whatever you want...or a Star Wars game where the characters are all life-like, etc.

There can still be room for artistic vision...the developers could still warp appearances a certain way...they can opt for a cel-shaded look, whatever.

I guess I just don't understand the animosity towards realism...not all games have to look like they came out real life...but a few would be awesome.

@Xen, just because a human in a game looks like a human in real life doesn't mean you'll be staring at cutscenes or "playing out a movie"...I'd say there's more room than ever for creativity when the world is your canvas...right now we're limiting to a certain amount of polygons and animations...what about when there are no more limits? The possibilities for excellent videogames will be much greater, whether or not they go for realism.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

@Dgc1808:  Why though? If we could have a similar style to those cutscenes, only with ultra-high resolution to the point they look like real people, what's wrong with that?

It's like people who hated 3D because 2D games had such cool art styles....which they did, but 3D brought something different to the table...and I think ultra-realistic graphics will bring something different to the table as well...it'll open up possibilities for new types of games.

@Me:  Yeah I'm sure ultra-realistic graphics will cost a lot...but I'm talking about an affordable system...if these kinds of graphics were available without cutting a game down to 15 hours...would you want it?  If not, why not?

This thread sounds familiar; I remember it dying after I asked this same question...so I want an answer.  If graphics like this are possible, and reasonable, why would you not want it?

Because in the realm of artistic presentation, the concept of "realistic" is the single most boring and overdone idea. It also tends to be one of the most expensive. I know you're want to assume that this will be cheap as borscht at some point, but there are always opportunity costs. I'd rather have four projects trying to create something new and unique than two projects competing to be the most realistic. After over a decade of watching CG and video game graphics get closer to realism, I'm getting really tired of the idea. I want something creative and something new. Real is what's outside my window and it's not very exciting.

Honestly, I'm much more interested in quality animations than quality textures and shading. This technology might do some great things for human animations and other animations based off of real-world objects and creatures, but it won't do much for fantastic creatures or superhuman feats.

There can always be creative and artistic games...realistic games don't have to be out of that category though.

And I'm not bunching in wannabe realistic games. I mean games that are indecipherable from real life, which we have never seen. I think when we see that, things will be different from the "different shade of brown game with the best textures we can currently support."

I don't want my games to be interactive movies... (save for the MGS series) I want my games to be games, with graphics that suit them.

Ok I dont mean interactive movies as in you sit and watch half the time, I mean interactive movies, as in you're playing  through an action scene and it looks exactly like that: an action scene. Like imagine playing GTA 4, except all the people looked like real people. Wouldn't you feel so much more immersed in the world?

Basically, I'm not saying gameplay has to change, will change, or should change. I'm just saying, this technology will just make whatever game you're playing look more realistic.

i completely agree having realistic games doesn't mean that artistic games won't exist as well and that's as it should be...something for everyone.

i also agree that realism works great for some games but not for other. i imagine sports games would benefit greatly from realism. i dunno, maybe it's an unfair generalization but the realistic (or wannabe realistic) games are all shooter based. shooting pixalized ducks in duck hunt back on the NES was awesome but the more you make the targets look like real people the more unappealing i find it. there's a point at which it just becomes disgusting honestly and evidently i'm already getting there.

that's part of why i don't like realism.  oh sure, give me tons of high res textures and polycounts but keep them cartoony overall.

Don't people understand that realistic graphics will never be the norm? People will start making a lot of ultra realistic games when the technology gets there and then they will move on, games 20 years from now will experiment with graphics that will simply blow your mind, super realistic yet completely non-realistic at the same time, imagine viva pinata with completely realistic graphics, or a game that looks like a Bosch painting, or game taking place completely underwater. Of course by then games will played by simply going to sleep and dreaming, and will be able to stimulate all six senses, and help people with psychological problems and mental disabilities, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

Also those who say realism is boring dont know what they're talking about, realism can be awe inspiring beyond comprehension, play around with it a little and your mind is officialy blown. You should see the stuff I dream at night, blows my socks off.

Although I have heard of this tech for a while now, I have never seen a video done quite so well. That was an amazing example. This is definitely quite a leap over what we have currently.

Just kiss the tip.

For FF and KH i'd be quite happy with Advent Children like quality. I don't wanna see games that look like live action movies. Period.

As cool as that is the thread title needs to be work safe. If you'd like to recreate it with a work safe title that's fine. And yes the ability for mods to change thread titles is one of the most requested features (trust me we want it too!).
