I always thought that no ps2 support meant software emulation only... but it looks like they mean there is no way to play PS2 games on these ps3 models?  I have the original 60gb ps3 model so I have full backwards compatibilty so it doesn't affect me directly.

but why wouldn't they include software based PS2 compat?  or am I mis undestanding/mis reading it?  It doesn't cost them anything, right?

It's not that they are holding out on us. It's that they don't have full software BC yet.

So you can *try* to play PS2 games but they may or may not work depending on weather ot not they emulate properly?

No, you can't play any PS2 games on any 40GB or the NEW 80GB systems. The OLD 80 GB system had partial software BC in that it stil contained 1 of the 2 required PS2 chips and emulated the other. The NEW 80GB system and 40GB systems would have to have a firmware update that emulates both chips, thus it would be Full software BC, not partial.

I'm hoping they figure it out and release a firmware upgrade. Heck, I would pay 30$ in the PSN store for a downloadable PS2 emulator.

Thanks for clearing that up Dogs Rule... i didn't realize the existing emulation required a few PS2 chips still.
