Forums - Sony - PS3 on the rise. Doomsayers eat crow.

Spankey said:
@OP
nice sentiment, and I do agree that Sony have dealt with (most of) the original problems.
However the fact remains that while MS and Sony duke it out over small points of one-upmanship, Ninty is just sitting back and hoovering up the profits.
Further, it's still far to early to stoke the fires of the crow oven just yet; there's still a few years left of play for the crow to become nicely marinaded.

@Neos:
*facepalm*
no need to get so defensive, Ninty is still leading the game.

Eat it Sony isn't going to leave the console industry and PS3 is going to get 3rd is a good setiment?

The PS3 sure is doing better... but until it either

A) Takes first place

or

B) Makes money.

The doomsayers still have the arguement won, outside of the occasional crazy fanboy who said something like "it will stop selling by mid 2008."

Heck, it's not even time for most "doomsayers" who thought it'd be in third to eat crow until it

C) Passes the 360.

It all seems like an excessive endzone celebration after scoring a touchdown despite the fact that your down 17 more points. (That's just vs the 360.)

Around the Network

@Paul Warren: You're pointing out how the reviewers are irrelevant, since they don't seem to reach their audience with reviews - gamers. The problem with reviews is, that the reviewers look the games with technical aspects in mind, while gamers are looking for fun. Maybe you're delivering a deeper message, but i can't see your point.

As for the new, original IP:s, if you try to prove something, you can't "just pick the games you want".
Let's look at the old IP:s first, 80:s Donkey Kong, Mario, Metroid, Zelda; 90:s Fire Emblem, Pokemon (or was it 80:s), Starfox, F-Zero; 2000:s Animal Crossing, Brain Training, Big Brain Academy, "Wii series", Pikmin. And those were the games that have had sequels and are having still today. There's number of games that didn't (haven't yet had) have a sequel, such as Doshin the Giant, Geist, Eternal Darkness. And there's a number of new games, that use familiar characters, like Mario Party, Wario Ware, Luigis Mansion, Partners in time, Paper Mario, Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, Tetra's Trackers, Super Princess Peach. And coming titles like Disaster and perhaps even Project Hammer. I don't know what do you expect from Nintendo. They release a fair amount of new and old IP:s, it's just that making games for 30 years, eventually result to having a shitload of IP:s, that would be a waste for not to use.

So, Wii has other games than just Wii Sports to justify the purchase. What a surprise. Besides, Wii Sports attach rate is high in Japan, so it definate is a game that people want to play.

As for the PS2, we should check out the number of games "scoring higher than X" after Wii has been in the market for 8 years. Current comparision is very stupid between 20 months old system and 8 years old system. That would be like proving how much better launch PS2 had, since it has after 8 years in the market, thousands of games.

I believe the question wasn't about whether you like the games lineup or not, but how did the high metacritic score effect system sales. I think it was pointed out by Happy Squrriel that it wasn't the deciding factor between XB and GC.

Oh, and i don't know about Disaster or Wii Music for what kind of score to expect, but the Animal Crossing games have metascores of 86 and 87, and the Wii game propably hit the same range, so it is noticeably better than Wii Sports score.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Paul Warren, you can't have it both ways.

You can't disagree with the reviews that say Ocarina is the best, but then agree with the reviews that say the PS2 had more games above a certain benchmark. That's picking and choosing reviews to support your argument.

Take 'em all or leave 'em all.

It's obvious you don't agree with them, so why use some of them in arguments?

I say fuck 'em.

I don't care what kids think about Wii Sports. Kids don't have money. Parents do. Parents like Wii Sports. That's how the Wii sells to kids. It steals mom. Iwata stated that the first goal of the Wii was to use as little electricity as possible, and the second was: capture all moms. The whole motion sensing tech and TV remote and TV-styled interface was all designed to make it easier to capture moms. You capture the moms, you capture the kids and the husband. It works.

I know several people who paid $250 for Wii Sports. And during the frenzy of the few months right after launch, when the Wii had demo kiosks in the middle of the mall, people would just walk by, drop their jaws, play some bowling o tennis, and pre-order on the spot. These people hadn't played games before in their lives, and only cared about Wii Sports. It was worth it to them. Maybe they learned about other games later on, but at that moment, they paid $250 for Wii Sports.

And the Wii won't have an undoing, unless you mean it'll skyrocket as hard as the DS did, even though it's already trending above every gaming system every made. It has too much momentum for a lack of games that cater to Paul Warren to slow it down. It's not only possible for a system to cater to more than one market (including new ones), but it's possible for a gamer to enjoy more than one type of game. I can't wait for Mad World or Wii Music or Animal Crossing or Guitar Hero: World Tour or the new Wario.

no one is eating any crows yet bar the person who started this thread :p but truth be told:

1) Doomsayers more or less Doomed the PS3 for pretty much everything it is and was and i don't think they thought it would last as long as it has.

2) Blu Ray not being important mostly comes from people who don't own Blu Ray. Every individual I know prefers BR films to anything else. People buy legal purchased movies for quality of picture and sound and no one can do this better this gen then BR and the PS3 is the best BR player on the market with constant upgrades and extra features. Not many people in here have taken into consideration how many PS3's will be bought just for the BR side of things. As HD TV's get cheaper and BR drops in price (which is inevitable) PS3 sales are bound to rise.

3) BR is not needed for gaming... err last I checked, it's getting to that stage where it is. Developers prefer the freedom of space BR gives them and more games are being launched that require more space. Problem 360 owners will have are as follows :

a) they will get multiple discs with downgraded graphics due to compression or lack of space on the 3 discs and not wanting to spread the game over 4 discs.

b) for the fully downloadable games, they will have to hide their faces in shame for laughing at PS3 owners who have to do a part install since they will need to do a full install.

c) They will need to constantly buy over priced HHD from MS if this is the feature of 360 gaming.

4) It's the only console which is a combo of 360 and wii and when at the right price it will be the easier option for many. For a little extra money they will get BR, next gen graphic and motion controls, not to forget the new eyetoy games that will be going casual like the wii games.

Whether PS3 gets 2nd place this gen is only a question of time, however, like many have pointed out, getting 1st place this gen will require a hell of a lot more work. This xmas will be a good indication IMO to what the PS3 will have in stock for us next year. If PS3 does well in Xmas, 2009 will be a good year, but if xmas goes by not doing much- 2009 will be sluggish with spikes in sales when a new IP or highly anticipated title is released.

Let's see what the future holds; will sony eat crows or will it be the those who predicted the failure of the PS3.
