Forums - Gaming - Timed-Exclusivity?

I find it odd that Sony fans are now screaming bloody murder when last gen they enjoyed timed exclusives - GTA comes to mind - and Xbox owners had to wait years to play the games. I couldn't wait - I bought a PS2 to play the series. Now, at the beginning of this gen, MS talked to Namco about exclusivity. They secured it and it's paying off.

Your list needs updating:

Timed exclusives on the 360:

Bioshock
Eternal Sonata
Ace Combat 6
Oblivion
Splinter Cell: Conviction

Timed exclusives on the PS3:

Haze
Virtua Fighters 5
UT3

All I saw over the Web before UT3 hit the PS3 was how awesome mods in UT3 on the PS3 would be. That has'nt been the case, has it?

I am sorry you are tired of the exclusives going MS's way. Me? I'll usually wait until the second set of games hits a system.

Exclusivity really just enhances particular systems. As I stated earlier, I had no desire to buy a PS2. However, when I finally played GTA3, I went to buy it at a Gamestop and they told me it would be years before it appeared on the Xbox. I bought a PS2 that same weekend. I suspect many gamers are doing the same thing.

Take FF13. Folks now know it will be on the 360 as well. That's one less reason to buy a PS3. The less reasons to buy a more expensive console makes it easier to get with cheaper alternative, especially if it gets the games first.

I think if MS had played fair like most in here want them to, it would be the Xbox all over again. This gen, MS said no and didn't drop the ball. If you are on the better end of the deal, you are thankful for the flood of games. If not, you are stuck to wonder what in the world Sony did wrong this gen so far in losing big titles to multiplat.

You made valid points. During last gen, I didn't really pay close attention to the "console war". I just played the games that were available. But now, much wiser and older, I just finded it annoying to have to wait.

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

Guidelines to understanding my train of thought:

  • THE METAL GEAR SOLID FRANCHISE IS THE BEST THING TO HIT THE PLANET SINCE THE PS3!! THUS, MGS FRANCHISE >> SLICED-BREAD.
  • Solid Snake shall and well always shove 1up mushrooms up Mario's ass.
  • Solid Snake shall and well always decimate Master Chief with a flurry of rocket launchers, shotgun rounds, and a 20 minute monologue.

Waiting is no joke. I tell you - to play some of the coolest games on other systems can be pricey. While the PS3 does have some good games - Warhawk, Uncharted, MSG4, Ratchet and Clank, Motorstorm - the chance to play Bioshock the first time around and even Oblivion was worth it for me. I am a vet of last-gen and just LOL that folks will throw up RROD and won't mention the PS2's DRE. Folks still bought PS2s with that nasty error.

For gamers, it's about games. You buy a system with games you like. For others, it's brand loyalty. For me? Games. I bought a PS1 for games. I bought an SNES, NES, N64 and DS for games. I bought a PS2 and Xbox for games. I bought the 360 for games. If it's one or a few I have to have, I'll sacrifice and snag a system for those games.

it dont really bother me that much because i can play other games that ar going to be cool, whilst waiting. now if the game i am waiting for is really really good then i might get a tab bit annoyed about it, apart from that na dont bother me.

lol. Tell me about it. But, I couldn't pass up MGS4, Uncharted, Resistance, etc. In the end, it's as you said it. It's about the games. I chose the PS3 as my console, you chose Xbox360 as yours. We're both happy. I know I've been.

If Microsoft or any company for that matter has the resources to do what Microsoft is doing in the video game industry, then I guess that's welcome. Sony and Nintendo has the resourses to do what Microsoft is doing right now but since one of them is outselling the competition in all regions and the other dominated for the last ten years, I guess they think they don't need to. And because of that, Microsoft is taking advantage and is paying off.

Generation 8 Predictions so far.....(as of 9/2013)

Console that will sell most: Nintendo Wii U

Who will sell more consoles between Microsoft/SONY: SONY

I'm not pissed. I'm just annoyed at the fact that other gamers, who may not have the funds to purchase a second console, need to wait longer just to play what others probably will deem "old news".

Maybe you should have done research before you bought the first console? You're not gonna tell me the games on the PS3 were that good that you wanted to get that before the x360?

If you got it for the blu-ray, tough luck. You bought it for movies not for games. Go get a gaming console that has the games you want, when you want it.

I'm sorry. Were you just trying to enforce your opinon as fact? Take that crap out of here.

He did get the PS3 for its games and future releases as mentioned in his lastest post.

Yes sir. I'm at his house threatening him with bodily harm if he doesn't answer "no". Stop being delusion, x360 had the best lineup when he bought it, he even said it had great lineup, and it's not even a debatable topic that x360 lineup got better throughout the year.

Here, found one source for you. Don't really care to look for more so if you disagree with it, find me one that said ps3's 2007 lineup was better.

Microsoft's primary strategy for building it's exclusive library is to buy exclusives from third parties, in contrast with Sony, who prefers to make their own internally. However, third party exclusivity contracts never call for permanent exclusivity, instead calling for exclusivity for a certain period of time (usually 6 months, sometimes a year), and in this age of high development costs, this results in many 360 exclusives eventually going multiplat, like Bioshock and Eternal Sonata, rather than just staying exclusive, like many games last gen (though even last gen some of the bigger ones went multiplat, like GTA and MGS2). For other games, MS paid for timed exclusivity for a very short period of time (one month for Rock Band 2, a few months for the original Rock Band in Europe last year).

The only 360 games that are guaranteed to not come to the ps3 at some point are those published by MS, which aren't all that many (particularly now that BioWare and Bizarre have been picked up by larger publishers, and Team Ninja is now defunct, though MS only published NGII for them).

Luckily for ps3 owners, Sony now has a rule saying that developers can't release a game on the ps3 after the 360 version has released without adding more to the game, so the ps3 versions of these games come with quite a bit of extra content versus the 360 originals.

Come to think of it, I wonder what this rule means for the short timed exclusive Rock Band 2, or the delayed ps3 version of the Last Remnant?

In the end, I don't mind all this timed exclusivity business. I'll play the ps3's exclusives now, then play the 360's exclusives when they head to the ps3 or PC down the line. ;)

there isn't a published timed exclusivity deal.
unless they actually pay money to square secretly

anyway sony got a first party second party studios working for them

in contrast to microsoft that have nothing.
third party can't ignore ps3 for long especially in japan that have more than 4 times xbox360 market.

xbox360 may have the third party sometimes first but when the games are released on the ps3 they will have a huge market too, plus the first parties.

I would love to believe this, but my question now is this.

Why not delay the 360 version until the PS3 version is completed?

They seem to have no problem doing the opposite with Final Fantasy XIII.

I believe this question has not been answered yet.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.
