If it did gaming is ruined forever because competition is what keeps the customer the center of attention. If only one hardware was on the market, competition for software would continue, but no effort would need to be put in the hardware.

If there comes a time when there is only one console, then that console would have to be otherworldly good. In fact, it would have to be scrumtrulescent. Otherwise, I cannot foresee how there could possibly be only one system.

The only way this would happen is if the global economy is so bad that the videogame market becomes small enough to only have one company be able to profit.
