Forums - Gaming - The "Tales of" series, and exactly why Vesperia is a "big deal"

Its almost like SMT going exclusive to 360. Sure a bunch of die hard fans like myself who would buy it on day one would purchase a 360 for it even though I hate multiple consoles. SMT is too hard to resist except the game gets very bad reviews. SMT is not the kind of series where you wait for a price drop because you'll only get a price hike when the scalpers have all the copies left lol. Hopefully M$ won't pay for SMT....I doubt they think it matters lol.

Rant over. Conclusion: Tales is not that big of a deal. Its not even a big deal period. No JRPG outside FF and DQ are a big deal anywhere!

It's a big deal for gamers. If you thought I was talking about sales, you misunderstood. By your assertions, no consoles are a big deal outside of the DS and the Wii.

In reality, MS is bringing a few hundred thousand fans exactly what they want. Myself, being one of those fans, finds it to be a huge deal.

The FF series has some fantastic games. As far as that goes, I think MS did a great job in obtaining FFXIII.

If Tales of Vesperia, Star Ocean 4, Infinite Undiscovery, WKS, Disgaea 3, and The Last Remanant and which console these games land on isn't a "bid deal" you coulda confused me with all the heated discussions going on about them on this forum. You could include Verses13 in that list, since it isn't a numbered Final Fantasy, and therefore won't sell as much simply because of its title. Does that make it a non-entity, or not a "bid deal"?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

Nice topic Zen!

You made me want to purchase Tales of Symphonia or Tales of the Abyss for the PS2. I could use a good RPG right now...

I've pretty much only played Square RPGs... Is the Tales series similar to any of their games? Also, which one of the two Tales games would you recommend?

When you mean anime inspired, does that mean the anime art style?

Yep, anime artstyle. All of them, I think.

@Zen

Yeah.

Also, found this:

Just wow at Tales of Destiny PS1. The 4 highest selling Tales in Japan just happen to be Team Destiny games. Team Destiny is likely going to make the next Wii Tales...so I wonder if it'll be in the top 10 sold Tales games :O

I am suprised that Team Destiny games sold the best since Team Symphonia's games are considered to be the best in the series.

Sales often don't denote quality. I'll refrain from speculation beyond that, except to say, that just because Team Symphonia makes the "best" games in my, Americas, and Famitsu's opinions, doesn't mean the other games aren't good, or even great. They just don't match Symphonia's magnificance.

Tales of Destiny

Yes, american reviewers are very biased against anime inspired JRPGs.

If you can only enjoy a game because it got a AAA review, you need to skip this series.

@Pristine20

Blame Namco-Bandai for not marketing the series very well in the West

Its not just the west, the game would have dachshund legs in JP. If it was heavily marketed in the West like LO, it won't sell enough to recoup such costs!

Go with Symphonia, and hmm, It's like Star Ocean 2, but better.

Yes it will, during its inevitable PS3 release, when it'll give the PS3 a big bump in Japan and sell to PS3 onlookers who have wanted it since it debuted on the 360 and then went into cult status greatness as word of mouth spread.

Edit: lol, everybody stop quoting that chart, it's huge.

You would be right about the consoles if they hadn't all broken 10 mil. However, the wii is still a much bigger deal than the ps360 because of its mainstream appeal. Ps360 are still alive and kicking because of the wii being a "non-traditional" console and its inability to sell third party traditional games very well.

Those other games are not big deals till they prove otherwise. It depends on how many of those gamers you mention who actually care enough to buy those games. I know people who cried about ff13 not being exclusive to ps3 yet they've never played an FF in their entire lives. Fanboys rant for the sake of ranting on websites like this. What people spend money on is what constitutes the "big deal" to the public. "Tales of' may be a big deal to you but it seems like the vast majority of the gaming community beg to differ.

depends on how the exclusivity deal went and how many people would still care when it releases on ps3. People would still care if its timed early enough but it if not...Watch bioshock sell like my saliva when it releases on ps3. Now for a much more niche game.....

I don't think Namco is going to fool around with the Cell just for a port though, especially since the majority of Tales sales come from Japan and PS3 isn't exactly lighting up the charts there in the first place. With none of the core Tales teams having any known experience with the PS3's architecture that might be just a little too much trouble for a Vesperia port. PS3 fanbs may be hungry for JRPGs, but tha'ts what FF13 is for.

Uh wrong.

A) Namco and Sony have a joint operation called Cellius where they are exploiting the Cell.

B) Eternal Sonata / Trusty Bell (built off the same graphic engine of this game is coming to PS3 this November, it will probably happen with this game too.

Well, ES is already coming to PS3. How fooling around with the Cell do they have to do? (Answer: None)
