Forums - Gaming - The "Tales of" series, and exactly why Vesperia is a "big deal"

Its review score comes out to a high 8 or low 9 at best. Almost all FF games have had much higher scores.

Tales games get poor reviews in they states. This game will be no different. Tales of the Abyss I believe averaged a 79 or something like that, despite being the best in the series. These games are very traditional, and anime themed.

FF games get high scores for a reason. However, Tales of Symphonia is right up there with some of the lesser FF games, imo, and a great JRPG. Dont' let reviews fool you. If Vesperia game scores 80 percent on gamerankings, it'll probably be the best Tales game ever released.

Tales of Symphonia got an 86. It's one of my favorite JRPGs. A triumph.

Nobody's hyping this game to get AAA on gamerankings. It won't.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Yeah.

Also, found this:

Just wow at Tales of Destiny PS1. The 4 highest selling Tales in Japan just happen to be Team Destiny games. Team Destiny is likely going to make the next Wii Tales...so I wonder if it'll be in the top 10 sold Tales games :O

If you combine ToS it's right up there with Destiny.

I am suprised that Team Destiny games sold the best since Team Symphonia's games are considered to be the best in the series.

Proof that reviewers in the West are biased against JRPGs not called Final Fantasy.

Sales often don't denote quality. I'll refrain from speculation beyond that, except to say, that just because Team Symphonia makes the "best" games in my, Americas, and Famitsu's opinions, doesn't mean the other games aren't good, or even great. They just don't match Symphonia's magnificance.

Yes, american reviewers are very biased against anime inspired JRPGs.

If you can only enjoy a game because it got a AAA review, you need to skip this series.

Abyss was a great game. I can testify to that. Still, tales has nothing on FF's popularity. If M$ had secured FF13 exclusivity, 360 would've sold .5mil on day 1 of the game's release in JP.
FF and DQ are popular by name alone in JP. Funny enough, storywise, Abyss>>Ff12. I prefer FF12's gameplay though.

Its almost like SMT going exclusive to 360. Sure a bunch of die hard fans like myself who would buy it on day one would purchase a 360 for it even though I hate multiple consoles. SMT is too hard to resist except the game gets very bad reviews. SMT is not the kind of series where you wait for a price drop because you'll only get a price hike when the scalpers have all the copies left lol. Hopefully M$ won't pay for SMT....I doubt they think it matters lol.

Rant over. Conclusion: Tales is not that big of a deal. Its not even a big deal period. No JRPG outside FF and DQ are a big deal anywhere!

Excellent info on the series...

I am actually stunned at the effect this game has had on 360 in Japan...

I really didn't think it would do so well... Kudos for Microsoft securing this exclusive... Even if it ends up only being timed...

When you mean anime inspired, does that mean the anime art style?

@Pristine20

Blame Namco-Bandai for not marketing the series very well in the West

Yes it is.

Tales > Every other RPG series ever.

Its only your opinion. I could say the same of SMT yet no iteration of either series has even broken 1 mil judging by your chart. on the other hand, FF remakes that the whole world has played still break 1 mil easily. Even a questionable DQ game on wii broke a mil yet Tales couldn't make it on PS2/PS1
