Forums - Sales - Famitsu: Wii has the highest attach ratio of any console since 96' in Japan

What bothers me about all these news posts is that they always link the Wii and DS into a group. In truth, the DS is what's really demolishing the charts in Japan. Besides the high attach rate, the Wii isn't doing as good. For instance, there are only 3 games in the top 20. However, the article points out that between the DS and Wii, Nintendo has 15 of the top 20.

It tends to be misleading when combined. The wii is doing good, but I think it still could do even better with more (good) software support.

Be glad they ain't. It gives the competition a chance to make some presence. It's inevitable that once Wii tightens the grip there will no be nowhere for the other consoles to go. Nintendo domination is already apparent in Japan. When Wii inevitably improves in supply (allowing more games to be sold since more people can find the system) it's basically all over for any other competitor in the Japanese market.

These little gaps give a little leeway for others to get notice on the charts so be thankful. Remember, you're just looking at the beginning of the WiiDS Phenomenon.

Especially when you consider that some DS's may be resales to people who own the regular ds + DS Lite.

Doing the math real quickly, the VG Charts attach ratio for each console up to the 24th is as follows:

DS: 70,605,430 / 17,853,898 = 3.9546
Wii: 6,644,098 / 2,838,463 = 2.34
PS2: 119,653,734 / 21,899,940 = 5.46
PS3: 1,389,589 / 974,023 = 1.4
PSP: 11,326,678 / 5,672,694 = 1.997
X360: 1,348,488 / 408,449 = 3.301
GBA: 47,639,200 / 16,687,111 = 2.855

Okay, based on that... the X360 has a better attach ratio than the Wii and the PS2 has a huge ratio...

So what metric they used is beyond me.

As has been pointed out, they said platforms, so if it was just about that month, then the DS wins. If its in its lifetime... the Wii isn't winning that either.

Wow the PS3 attach rate in Japan is... disgustingly bad.

Yeah, the only systems with a below 2.0 average are the PS3 and PSP. Especially bad for the PSP since it's been out for some time.

I think Wii Play still comes with a remote there though.

So much for the idea that casuals don't buy games though.

Yeah I think alot of times casuals buy more games. If they are older have a job and make good money, they'll walk in a store and just buy a few games. That's my brother. where as I'll be anal about a game due to reviews and wait till I beat another game. Or I'll just rent some games or buy them used. Alot of casuals just dump the money, and I think were going to find Nintendo is going to benefit nicely this gen for going after this group.

You just discrebed me, since I have taken my exam from the university I have bought a lot of crap to my cube...

Buy it and pray to the gods of Sigs: Naznatips!

maybe they mean the biggest attach ratio for when the consle is first bought.

Cause PS2 will definitly be higher since its been out for ages.

Who knows what they mean.

Mrstickball, are we looking at the same numbers?
Wii sold ~550k software and ~270k hardware in first 4 wks of June. That's ~2 ratio

Stickball I was waiting for your comment on this...

My theory is they are talking about software 30 weeks into the console's life:

Wii Play + Wii Sports = 1.0 to 1.25 attach ratio

Everything else (Zelda/Fire Emblem/Wario/One Piece/Pokemon/Excite Truck) adds around 1 units of software/hardware.

360 has no title to sell over 200k lifetime as far as I know, so no title amounts to more than a ~.5 attachment rate. If hardware sales were higher, this would be an ideal environment for 3rd parties, but in raw unit sale.

PS3 has the lowest tie ratios..

Looking back at N64, Mario 64 was huge..then...not much until Mario Kart 64

PS1 started in 1994 so it doesn't count, DC and Xbox bombed...

PS2 had stronger hardware sales, so despite comparable software, the tie ratio is weaker than Wii.

That is my best bet at an explination for Famitsu's claim, although I agree the tie ratios are weak.

 i agree

Using the weekly historical data here on VG chartz, at 30 weeks into the PS1 lifespan (June 25, 1995), it had the following numbers:
cumulative hardware: 962,377
cumulative software: 3,896,557
This results in a cumulative attach rate of 4.05

The weekly Wii data for June 24, 2007 shows:
cumulative hardware: 2,838,463
cumulative software: 6,644,098
This results in a cumulative attach rate of 2.34

Obviously the PS1 is higher as others in this thread have guessed. I'm too busy to do it right now, but now I'm curious to see how all the other consoles have done at the 30 week mark. Hopefully I can do that tonight.

And though this should be obvious to anyone paying attention to the thread, I'll state it anyway. This is Japanese data, not worldwide or US or anything else.

i just did that, so i now think the sources theory must be right, because; attach rate for consoles at 30 weeks, launched after 96. Dreamcast- 2.714 360- 2.606 GC- 2.460 Wii- 2.34 N64- 2.012 DS- 1.873 Xbox- 1.854 Ps2- 1.646 Ps3- 1.374 Psp- 1.350 GBA- 1.316 so it, cant [or shouldnt] be that either. wow the ps1 attach rate is huge for 30 weeks, the only one over 3 and it's even over 4

Perhaps by "attach rate" they're looking at accessories as well. The Wii does great with accessories.
