Forums - Gaming - Top 5 Most Disturbing Moments In Games

These are the moments we live for. The moments that stay with us longer than the happy endings. The ones that frighten us, disturb us, or make us question the developers’ - and our own - sanity. Full of violent outbursts, dismemberment, explicit and vulgar sexuality, and an atmosphere nearly unmatched, these handful of moments I present you with are the ones I feel have left the biggest impact on myself both memorably and hauntingly

**BE WARNED - SPOILERS are contained within. Read at your own discretion.**

#5: Ravenholm (Half-Life 2)

Ravenholm is one of the most bizarre and frighteningly eerie locations in a video game - ever. The abandoned town desolated by the undead, the ominous wailing off in the distance seemingly coming from every direction; the sheer destruction that laid this town to waste as bodies litter the streets.

Gordon Freeman’s only solace in this area lies with the other human inhabitant of Ravenholm, an equally-disturbing and paranoid individual, Father Grigori - the towns former pastor and now current-gun supplier to any who dare to pass through the gates of the dead. As Alyx tells Gordon, “That’s Ravenholm. We don’t go there anymore…”

#4: The Entire Game (Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem)

Eternal Darkness is a lesson in sanity and paranoia control. The game literally contains a sanity meter, a green on-screen bar that drops whenever your character encounters enemies in the game. Depleting this meter will result in some of the most outrageous and terrifying things ever in a video game. One such effect consists of a skewed camera angle accompanied by omnipresent whispers, cries, and various other obscure noises.

Some of the various other effects are far more bizarre: when casting a spell, the player’s upper-body abruptly explodes; the player’s head occasionally falls off, and if picked up, begins reciting Act III, Scene I from Shakespeare’s Hamlet; the character begins whimpering and rambling on to him or herself; walls and ceilings start bleeding, while attacking them causes them to bleed more.

And those are just a handful of the many more effects. Play this game in the middle of the night, with the lights off, and a pair of headphones on to immerse yourself into this psychological terror. You won’t be disappointed.

#3: Televised Execution (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare)

The most recent game on this list, Call of Duty 4 as a whole wasn’t that disturbing (of course, the prospect of Modern Warfare is in and it itself a terrifying feeling). However, the one moment in the game where I truly felt uneasy was within the first 30 minutes of playtime. The player, through the eyes of the captured president Yasir Al-Fulani, witnesses the destruction and turmoil going on in the Middle East as he’s being “escorted” (to put it lightly) through the streets of a war-torn nation.

As you drive through the city, you bear witness to several horrifying events, namely the murder of several civilian via firing squad on the side of the road. It’s only when you reach your destination that you, as the player, realizes what’s happening; President Yasir is strapped to a wooden pole, a hauntingly modern Gallows Pole, and murdered execution style on international television.

#2: Pyramid Head and Mannequin (Silent Hill 2)

If you’ve seen this scene, you know exactly what I’m talking about. This isn’t disturbing in the sense that it’s scary or violent; it’s so obscene and just plain mortifying. As your character turns the corner, he has the unfortunate privilege of bearing witness to those infamous Pyramid Heads molesting several of the mannequins. There’s really nothing else I need to say about this, nor that I want to say. It’s a disturbing scene in every sense of the word.

#1: Albedo and MOMO (Xenosaga Episode I)

If this scene were nominated for an Academy Award, Albedo would win the prize hands down. This is easily, in my opinion, one of the greatest - and likewise most disturbing - moments ever conceived for a video game. Albedo’s infamous and memorable speech while taunting and tormenting the helpless MOMO is truly a work of art; his knowledge of language, religion, history, and every aspect of human nature proves why Albedo is also one of the most developed antagonists ever created.

He is an entity unto himself; a creation with no equal. This scene, single-handily, demonstrates the degree of Albedo’s insanity and the sheer masochism that he delights in showing to MOMO. I leave you all now with words from the infamous Albedo:

“Do you know what he said while he coughed up his lifeblood? ‘Except corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone.’ Wheat, eh? There’s enough of it, we can afford to waste as much as we want. Like my head, you see?”

When I saw the title of this thread, I knew the Silent Hill 2 scene would be on the list. That scene was horrifying and difficult for me to watch...so violent and sadistic.

Around the Network

No Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth or Cradle from Thief 3? Bleh.

I second that. Cerebral bore was the shit

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Well, that Silent Hill thing was just creepy... but I haven't played that many horror games or games where you can think about stuff, but due to my inexperience, I'd say those Zombies in Ocarina of Time when you are in the future for the first time, and then you hear the screams...and when they get close enough......they jump on ya and bite and ...uggh. When I first saw that, I jumped off the controller for a second.

Second thing, is Resident Evil, when you see that guy from the STARS team getting eaten by the first zombie you see.

Umm... in Jet Force Gemini when Tribals get slaughtered....
Umm....Baten Kaitos voice acting....

OH! Max Payne, when the story starts and you see the crib full of blood and you walk in too late to save your wife. No matter how fast you run, you can't save her before the shots.
Also, worse than that, is when Max starts hallucinating and the whole screen is running with blood and you hear weird noises and have to follow the blood smears.

And to round it out, I'll say *SPOILER, kinda* in the very beginning of Metal Gear Solid 4, where Snake DOES NOT know how to use a gun. It's not disturbing, just really sad. I actually felt sorry for a game character, which hasn't happened since *SPOILER*........the end of Shadows of Colossus. Snake just didn't belong in that place. He just seemed like, he no longer had purpose in the world.

The others were kinda meh. The SH2 one was freaking creepy though O_o Stopped the video a while through.

Also, I saw more Xenosaga vids and wow. Talk about pretty cinematic. It's graphics aren't all that great, but the way Xenosaga is executed is amazing.

I hated his laugh though. It just didn't stop! >_<

I guess it's a good list, but F.E.A.R. also had some pretty disturbing moments.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Watch my insane gameplay videos on my YouTube page!

enchanted arms had a lot of disturbing moments. every time makoto said something. and a number of them when he didnt say anything even.
