At one point, the Wii sat poised to be able to play DVDs. But with so many who already own DVD players, it seems Nintendo discarded the idea at launch, and there's no telling if they'll bother to revisit it. That hasn't stopped the homebrewers, however, as they've managed to hack their way into getting the Wii to play their movies, and they'll show you how, too.

I'd really like to check this thing out, but I'm too scared to even lose my Twilight Princess saves just to get it working. Apparently, it's easy to install... I'm not sure Nintendo is not going to reply to this though. Besides, I already have two DVDs and a 360.

Also, I'm not sure if it's against the rules to talk about homebrew stuff here, but anyway...

Meh DVD is a thing of the past it's quickly turning into blu ray.

only one version of the Wii is movie compatible. Unless this console is that Japanese version it was hacked.

Well, it looks like every version is capable of doing movie playback. Joystiq has a tutorial on how to install it all. The only thing you need is a SD card and Twilight Princess... But I'm not giving the link (just to be sure)!

I don't know man, hackers can do anything I guess, even with firmware updates! I think the ''Homebrew Channel'' is just a custom program loader itself, kind of like YASU cloaks SecuROM and all that stuff.

The loophole was only fixed for a few hours..... I read on NintendoWiiFanboy that the homebrewers were back in before the night was through.

Doesn't matter to me, I have a few DVD players and would not risk running anything like this.
