All the 40GB models do NEED to sell first. So if nobody buys them, when do the 80GB models come in to replace them?

I disagree, his title is dumb and pointless no doubt.  But the discussion is valid.  Many people thought that Sony announcing the 80g so soon before its release was a bad move, but it appears to not be having a huge effect in Europe.

I agree. Especially since the 80Gb has a Dual Shock and the 40Gb doesn't. I am really surprised that the current numbers are so high.

==> yep, it is a good way to see these sales numbers. Indeed, 80gb DS3 >> 40gb Sixaxis It means Ps3 sales will rise significatively when the 80gb will be released ...hope.
