Go PS3. DMC 4 FTW.

In other words the 360 has the biggest userbase and it has the momentum right now.

If you define "right now" as the last two weeks then this is correct. It will be different in the next couple of months once the 80Gb PS3 is out again of course.

Unfortunately for Sony most consoles are sold out side of Japan.

That is true but the exclusive FFXIII you mentioned will have the by far biggest impact in Japan, where the 360 won't get it. Which should reduce the 360gloating a tiny bit.

Whether they paid for exclusivity is immaterial, and for the majority of the titles it debatable.

If the 360 would get the exclusives because it is more important to publishers it would be a pro 360 argument. But since you mentioned JRPGs which are biggest in Japan where the 360 effectively doesn't exist I think there is not much to debate. Microsoft paid for them ... a lot. And this is no advantage to the console unless it increases sales. Which it only does a bit 650k is an embarrassment.

and tilt the focus major Japanese third party developers towards the West where MS is strongest.

ok this is an argument and a reason for Sony loosing out in Japan. I agree with you. But this is a pretty self-destructing approach that only damages Sony and doesn't help MS. They could do much more productive things with the money to increase their own sales. As a shareholder I would be pissed.

The PS3's biggest remaining THIRD-PARTY exclusive launched. Gran Turismo 5 is arguably its biggest exclusive.

Kryos, the GT series is 1st party, not 3rd.

That's what he said.

He didn't say that GT was 3rd party.  Brush up on your reading comprehension skills.

There is a period between the two statements.  Two totally different parts.

He says, The PS3's biggest remaining Third-Party exclusive [MGS4] launched (Period.

Then he says that GT is the biggest exclusive, third-party or not.

Again people.

The reason this is news is because of the install base.

360 has a 5.5 mil lead, so it losing in sales of a game is weird.

ah, I think the last thing people want here is 360 version vs. PS3 version threads... it would very embarrassing for the PS3 camp..

Yeah, probably would since the console has been out one year longer than the PS3.  It's expected that for the time being PS3 < 360 on Multi-plat games, but when it happens otherwise it really is respectable, considering install bases.

Lol@ 360 momentum.

Winning 2 weeks = momentum?  or winning 37 weeks?

I hate to have to point out that the 360 has won the last 3 weeks, not the last 2. Sadly

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Resident Evil 5 is next PS3 > 360

Good for the PS3. I own it for PS3 and it rocks except for that long 22-minute install. All in all the numbers for both system are good. I think that the game should have sold more copies. If you combine the PS3 and 360 numbers it's sold less then 2.5 million. I thought this game would have sold around that number by now.

Isn't DMC a popular game in Japan? In which case you'd expect the larger install base in Japan to have the effect that we are seeing here. Obviously the sales would have to be broken down by territory to see if this is the case.

A few points to be made in regards to this discussion.

This week would be the fourth week of 360 dominance if it wins which is almost assured given Vesperia and the modest difference in the other regions. No there is no special math to change this. The positions reversed the week of July 20th. Remember all tracking takes places after the week of sales in question. We will be getting the sales for the fourth week over the next couple days while we are actually right now in the fifth week. Here is the link, and god why do I have to show fellow posters this. What the hell happened to common sense did it go into the crawl space to die. I can surely smell something amiss.

I would also like to say that I am not surprised by the sales in the least. I can think of exactly two reasons as to why this happened. The first is that the PS3 had the larger Japanese user base, and the title sold well in Japan. The second is that Lost Odyssey launched a week after DMC 4 launched in North America. Say what you like, but it probably did hurt North American sales. Many consumers were presented with a difficult choice that month.

These two factors account entirely for the difference. The PS3 version in Japan enjoying four times the sales, and the fact that Lost Odyssey undercut sales in North America.
