Unfortunately the PS3 will never be a sub-$200 portable device. ;)

I wouldn't say never....

PS3 apparently hasn't gotten out of GC country in japan yet.  Kinda surprising considering they lead the world in HD and Blu-ray adoption.

PSP anyone?

even the software is starting to sell now...it's definately a crazy market, but they don't forget about consoles that are behind.

Monster hunter was the selling point for it, and i think Sony should fight hard to at least make it multi-plat for Wii/PS3 on that monster hunter game. but either way, they don't forget and consoles that are dead last can make a big comeback and PSP is the one to look at.

You are going to have alot criticism here because some people just plain hate the PS3/Sony here.  You are right, people here said the PSP was dead in the water in Japan with no hope of surviving about a year ago.  Now it appears that it will become SE's next main system for development.  PSP was the first time in history that a losing console was able to make it later in life.

We have seen that MS is making improvements from 1.5k to 5k on resting weeks.  The 360 waking up relatively after 2.5 years on the market.  Sony could do at least 20k / week if they did these things -

1.  Make the PS3 physically smaller

2.  Reduce the price to $299

3.  Have a constant stream of jRPGs coming from it's first/second party developers.  No, not sRPGs or other Japanese developed games of different genres.  I mean traditional jRPGs like White Knight Chronicles, Dark Cloud, Legend of Dragoon, etc.  If they stopped developing so many $50 million + shooters for the Americans and Europeans, they could more often develop cheaper, but more frequent jRPGs that come out on a regular basis.

For hardcore gaming, jRPGs in Japan are the life force just like shooters are in America and the West.

They are really into Blu-ray recorders over there, which are similarly priced to the PS3.  I don't think we have any here, but they can record all of their HD shows easily.

Huh.  No kidding.  Why does Japan get everything so cheap?

i think LBP is going to be more important than anything Sony has on the table. Sony cant wait until FF13 for an upswing and LBP is what they need globally to start moving forward.....and i think it will surprise MANY MANY MANY people as far as japanese sales go.

Yeah, I think blank discs are only about $5 there.  I'll have to check when I get there in a month.  They had the BD recorders in 2005 when I was there for about $3000, so they have definitely come down.  There is a pretty strong video/audiophile culture there.  You can still pick up LD players in the regular stores.

A slimline PS3 will go a long way toward it making a comeback in Japan. Size, and power usage, is extremely important there.

For that matter, a slimline XBox360 may do well in Japan, if the 360 keeps getting good JRPGs.

Both slimlines are coming sooner, rather than later, I think.

Oh yeah.  Laserdisc caught on big over there when it came out... it became the main standard for Anime collectors at the time.

Japan has an admiral way of ignoring the rest of the world when it comes to what they like.

Look at the Sega Saturn... or those crazy non Zip compressions they use that aren't anything ever used outside of japan.
