Forums - Nintendo - Did you skip the Metroid Prime series because it was First-Person?

Yezzir. I don't really play FPS' at all to be honest. I'll probably play R2 and Killzone 2 but that's about it for the rest of this year. It's kind of like Crysis and COD4 where I have to play them cause of all the hype.

Third person shooters are so much better anyway. Just look at what Gears of War did to all of the shooters that were released in the same year as it was.

I took a flier on Prime 1 back when it released (having never played any previous Metroid games). All I can say is it ended up being my favorite game of all time and I seriously can't see any game being better in my eyes. Prime 2 and 3 are also excellent games. Hunters is a complete abomination. Zero Mission and Super are also great, so I love both 2D and 3D metroid.

Who cares what genre Prime is classified as. It has adventure elements, it has puzzle elements, and it has shooter elements, so it's kind of a hybrid of all of these. The emphasis is definitely not on shooting though, that's why it has a lock-on targeting system.

No, I just dont see how metroid would work if it wasant first-person...

Crazy futuristic 3D side scroller? I would so play that shit.

I did skip it for a while when I didn't like first person shooters. But I eventually played it and liked it.

I skipped it on the gamecube.Maybe because I was 11? I dont know...FPS didn't grab my attention back then.

It's not a first person shooter. It's a first person adventure with shooting elements.

Exactly...It fits more into the category of FPS then action-adventure.

Metroid Prime is not a shooter. There are more than just shooting in Metroid Prime, there are elements like Morph Ball mazes, platform jumping, and puzzle solving. And I say these elements are more than 50% of the gameplay experience.

Your first sentence contradicts your second...Take a look yourself.

Once again, I'm going to say that it's a first-person adventure game with shooting elements. It's kinda like how Zelda is a third-person adventure with RPG elements. Also I played this game less than 48 hours ago so I doubt I need a gamespot review.

The sentence in bold proves that indeed it is a FPS. Secondly do you recall me saying anything about it just been FPS?Yes your right, I'm wrong including Gamespot.

Yes, you and Gamespot are wrong. It's not a FPS. This has been substantiated for years. Gamespot simply doesn't have a FPA category in their CMS.

By your accounts, Duck Hunt is a FPS.

Take a look at the bold. By your account Wikipedia is wrong, Ign is wrong, etc...

Dude, you didn't even look at IGN:

Reviewers are not always right, so don't rely too much on gamespot and then ignore Nintendo and Retro Studios.

Your loss. The first one is one of the highest ranked games of all time, and deservedly so.

Agreed, I only played Super Metriod before I picked up the first Metriod Prime, and man that was a pleasant surprise. Been a hardcore fan since. Really, its that kind of game.

Ratings mean nothing. Id rather play Pokemon Snap then GTAIV :P

Considering that I am probably one of the few that can whole heartedly vouch that I would much rather play Snap over GTAIV I would still have to recommend that you at least go back and play the first prime on GC. I can't vouch for the wii version as the fact that it did not include multiplayer didn't necessitate me buying it right away as I'm short on time these days and will find it hard to complete it when i have a backlog of games from ps2 to still play haha -__-; but I can at least say that playing the first prime definitely did not have the feel of a standard fps and as others have mentioned you can find it relatively cheap!!

I'm with the OP, accept for different reasons. Yes I'm against it turning into a first person shooter, and yes, that's part of the reason the series is dead to me now, but man I tell you. The day you get rid of my superdash, moon jump, and screw attack, is the day Metroid stops being the series I fell in love with :P

Metroid was almost NEVER about the guns, and back-tracking was ONLY cool because you had those awesome friggin powers!!! Back-tracking in first person shooters <- bam I said it, is almost NEVER a good thing. And don't even get me started with the #@$^%$#@@#$ platforming.

Metroid prime in it's entirety can go suck it, I played metroid prime 1, and it can go suck it as well ;/ A man like Miyamoto CAN make mistakes, and in my personal opinion, Metroid prime was his biggest one. That was probably the killing blow to Nintendo in my mind, and I'ma be bitter about if for a long time :P

::chuckle:: From my point of view, what I've seen of your personal tastes, they are horrible. If you are really unhappy about something, I'll really like it. You should send me a list of your all time most hated games. They'll probably be the most fun games I'll ever play.

I could not be happier that Metroid went first person. The Prime series is of my all time favorite games. For those that don't like it, well, move along, find something else you like to play instead. A very large number of people enjoy the games the way they are. I would hate life if all these wonderful games, that I enjoy, and many other people enjoy, never came to be, because a few people don't like them and are outspoken. whine, whine. Then don't buy them and move on. No game will please everyone.

Though, I'm not saying I could never enjoy Metroid in any other persective. Personally I think a 3rd person view would also make for a very fun game. I don't think it's a bad idea to try.
