The fifth generation of video games saw a major shift in the gaming scene with a rapid transition of all major franchises into the third dimension, with varying degrees of success. This shift did produce some of the best games of all times(like LOZ:OOT, Super Mario 64,Metal Gear Solid, also a sixth gen classic Metroid Prime) as well as inferior ones like Castlevania 64,bombermam 64 etc(some might say even the FF series  was worse off in 3-d).

so what according to you, were the best and worst transitions?

I know many here will disagree with me but I hate Metroid Prime. What I really hate is the fact that they put it on the DS and haven't made any more sidescrolling Metroids. Metroid was my favorite NES game and I loved Super Metroid. I thought the GBA Metroids were also great. I can understand why they wanted to change the format for the GameCube and Wii, but why the DS? I played one level of Hunters before I shut off the game in disgust. Not every game has to go 3D and for handheld systems, 2D games are still awesome. I'm still pissed at Nintendo over Metroid. Some people may love Mario and Zelda, but for me it was Metroid.

i concur with your view about Metroid, as Super Metroid is one of the best games there are, and anybody who believes MP is a better game than Super Metroid are wrong.
But the point was transition, which would only take Metroid Prime into consideration ,And i believe that was a smooth transition

Metroid and FF made very good transits.

there is nothing wrong with sonic adventure 1 and 2. so the initial transition was fine they jsut fucked it up later.

Castlevania is the obvious choice here.

If you want to count them, Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R came first and were in 3D, and were abysmal.

Castlevania and Contra are shoe ins for the worst examples. Earthworm Jim also. Some may disagree but I hate Mortal Kombat's 3D transition.

Nintendo does the most bang up job of transitioning 2D to 3D, but even then I prefer Mario, Zelda and Metroid as 2D games over 3D ones.

The two I consider doing the best changes were Metal Gear Solid and Grand Theft Auto, just because I truly felt they were better in 3D than 2D.
