Forums - Gaming - Damn you Microsoft! -The Braid Thread.

I've been reading a lot about Braid today and the game has captured my attention with what is said to be an intellectually stimulating storyline. I also read several of the creators philosophical essays which are clearly very thoughtful. Though I hear the game doesn't feature much in the way of a conventional narrative, which I find frustrating and offensive I am regardless very interested in giving this a try, if for nothing else to show my support for experimental indie developers.

The problem? I no longer own an Xbox and Microsoft, per usual, hpaid for an exclusivity deal with the developers. I realize that it will be coming to PC sometime this year, but it begs the question, WHEN? First 3 day sales for Braid have been mildly successfull on Arcade, though I am not aware of the games budget to make any justifiable claims of success or failure. Nevertheless I feel a creeping sensation wishing for it's failure just to be able to play it on PC sooner rather than later -but of course I wish it's creators success dspite my frustration.

I've read people saying on forums that the game costs 20 bucks on Arcade, which while isn't outragiously high is substantially more than other Arcade titles. Is this true?

For those of you who have dl-d it and played with it, how do you find it so far? Does it live up to the critical acclaim?

First Braid is $15, and its worth every penny. It's a challenging, well thought out game. Second Microsoft is the publisher of the game. Like Sony is the publisher of the Pixel Junk games. They didn't pay another publisher to make it 360 exclusive.

$15, actually. I haven't played it yet, but it'll be the first thing I pick up once my Internet service starts up in a week and a half.

Also, most everything worth reading/watching/playing for its "artsy" story doesn't feature a conventional narrative. Does a Stanley Kubrick movie, or a Joyce novel, also offend you?

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

1. How dare Microsoft!

2. It's $15US. Only $5 more than what most new Arcade games run these days, including crap like Coffeetime Crosswords.

3. So far, it's my GOTY. Just mindblowing.

I wouldnt expect it on Steam for a few months because XBLA sales are not mild, they are great and since word of mouth/reviews is extremely positive, there is a lot more sales to go. And I pity you you non-360 owner :P

Its $15 and Im sorry for those who will not get to play it. Really. It lives up to the critical acclaim imo and the only downside is that it could be longer (which means we want more!). You only get a game like this that totally blows you away with its innovations once a year.

It will come on PC eventually regardless of the success of its XBLA sales because as far as I know Jonathan Blow is on the record saying that.

$15 is a steal for a game this good. Find a way to play it.

It is only a timed exclusive. Jonathan Blow has already said it will be on PSN, but not Wiiware.

It's your fault for not owning an Xbox.

Also, it's BS that you claim that Microsoft paid for the exclusive. Microsoft did NOT pay for the exclusive. Johnathon Blow, in his own blog stated that he offered Sony the chance of allowing Braid to be on PSN first, before he decided to put it on XBLA. That's Sony's fault, not MS moneyhatting.

WiiWare was right out, because their size limit (due to lack of storage on the console) is way too small for Braid. I talked to some folks at Sony but they were not interested in carrying the game. Later on I talked to someone from a different division who *was* interested, but by then I had signed with Microsoft and started the XBLA port.

Microsoft called me, rather than me calling them. The person there who called me was someone I knew from other circles (but not super well). He really understood the game and knew that it was something interesting and special, back when it looked extremely Programmer-Graphicsy and amateur. Unfortunately he left the company soon afterward!

You might want to learn a bit more about the game before you start on your ill-informed rant. Braid is $15, and will come to PC whenever JB decides to port the code. It's not about exclusivity, it's about 2 guys making a game, and not having the physical, or financial ability to port the game over to PC.

Also, Braid is doing very well on Xbox Live Arcade. The actual budget of Braid was $183,000 - Braid made more than $400,000 in 3 days, so it's very obvious that JB and Co. are going to be making a profit off of the game in a very short timeframe.

Get your facts straight before you look like another biased fanboy with little to no information about the game.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

This game looked like some serious fraud at first glance. However, after checking some reviews, and this thread, I am definitely going to download it.

Thanks guys.

The game is 1200 points. Those from the US would pay $15 for it. its about $19 for me. Not sure what it would be in the UK, but since you dont have a 360 the exact $toMSpoint doesnt really matter.

It is not "substantially more" than other games though. Prices are 400, 800, 1200, and 1600. Most being 800.
