What do you tell your kids about christmas and easter?

Around the Network

Same thing religious parents tell there kids.

How many religious families do you know of that fast from Good Friday to Easter?

EDIT:  When they are old enough, I will tell them why Christianity selected these dates for these holidays.

The same thing I tell them when they sneeze...When you die nothing happens.

I don't have kids, but if I am as jaded about holidays as I am now if/when I have kids, I'll ignore those holidays. We'll celebrate a holiday that doesn't require gift giving during heavy shopping season and will favor sale prices. ;)

EDIT: After all, kids won't miss what they don't know about.

I haven't had kids yet, but I've already decided I'm going to invent a new holiday for my kids that's cooler than Christmas, or just give them an assload of presents for Halloween instead.

Last thing I want is for them to get jealous of Christian kids. But I'm sure my kids will think Christianity is weird when they see them freaking out about how Satanic Halloween is, while we're dressing up as demons and having haunted houses and giant mountains of candy.

If they ask me anything, I'll tell them the truth. I don't think people should lie to kids.

Christmas is a joke anyway. A Pagan holiday hijacked by Christianity and then super-hijacked by consumerism.

I think my first clue when I was young, was when I let my Christian neighbor borrow Ghosts 'n' Goblins for the NES, and his parents made him return it immediately because it was Satanic trash. They'd only let him play Mario games and Bible games.

That's what I meant by, when they are old enough I'll tell them why they chose these specific days.

I share that feeling.

In practice, will that screw kids up, particularly their imagination, or will it actually help their imagination since they will not be limited by existing mythology?

I told my son the truth about crimbo, that it's about family and giving(not neccessarily getting) presents. I also had to explain to him that jesus is like Noddy; just someone from a madeup story. Bloody school filing his head with shit.

^ agreed with the Noddy thing.

When I have kids I am going to be straight with them from day one. I will just tell them Jesus may not have existed and that god does not exist.

However, if I end up with my current girlfriend things may not turn out like that because I'm guessing they will be half Jewish.

We would celebrate Christmas and Easter but not the religious idea's behind them just like most Europeans do.
