Forums - Website Topics - Site Suggestion: VGC Clock

Hey, guys

Here on VGC, we love us some video-game-related events.  Be it as large as an E3 conference, or as small as a private match in Brawl, we all love the sense of anticipation when a fun gaming event is nigh.

The only niggling annoyance we ever have with regard to this anticipation is this:

Poster A: "HEY GUYS, CONFERENCE STARTS AT 10 AM!"

Poster B: "Awesome!  Hey, is that Eastern, Pacific, Mediterranean, what?"

Poster A: "Uh... I think Eastern?  Maybe?"

Poster B: "Damn--I can't make plans until I know"

Poster C: "I just checked--it's [Time Zone X]."

Poster A: "Thanks, dude!  Can't wait!"

Poster B: "Cool... hey, what time will it be at for me in [Time Zone Y]?"

Poster C: "Uh.... maybe... I'm not too sure, actually.  Sorry..."

Poster A: "Yeah, I'm not sure, either, dude.  Sorry."

Ultimately at least a few people end up missing or coming late to an event due to this confusion.

So, I propose having a clock on the front page that shows the time based on the time zone where VGC's main server is located.  That way, everyone would see the same time.  There would be lots of benefits:

-When something's coming up at a given time, ONE person with knowledge of time zones (or Google) could translate and say "Ok, it's going to be on at 11:00 am VGC time."  Everyone would know what that means for themselves.

-It would be MUCH easier to schedule matches (and especially tournaments) for online games.  "Hey.  Up for a Brawl match at 4:00 VGC time?"  "Sorry, no can do--I won't be home 'till 6:30 VGC time.  7:00 work?"  "Sure!"

I know the problem I mentioned above is in no way exclusive to VGC (or even to the internet, for that matter), but it would be AWESOME if ioi could implement this feature, as I think everyone could benefit from it.

Good idea?  Bad idea?  Do I need to be shot?  Feedback!

This isn't a problem unique to VGC, and it's not like it's a huge deal, but

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Or they could just learn to read a clock and figure out what time zones are. It's called google.

self improvement is masturbation. now, self destruction........

or we could all agree to a time zone that everyone apporves of. Personally I recommend samoan time zone, simply because i think they deserve it. I will be happy to mentally shift 10 hours from a specifically listed time.

But that's always a bit of a hassle when you have to do it EVERY time an event time is announced, no? It might not be the best idea, just a thought for themore easily-confused on here (such as myself XD)

That would 'basically' be the same thing, I just thought it would be easier from a programming perspective to use the time zone I listed.  The only real difference between our ideas is that mine would show it on the front page vs. remembering.  That could work, though, if everyone was made absolutely aware of the time zone we used.

no i agree sink, i agree with your little clock game william tockman.

EDIT: not only that, but i'm pretty sure having an on site clock is a very simple bit of programming.

WHOA!  DON'T DO THAT!

My heart can only take so much!

All I was talking about would be something like that embedded on VGC's main page.

Yea, having like 4 little clock times would be good. I don't know my time zone, a lot of the time.
