Forums - Sony - Bioshock PS3 version has better graphics because of Blu-Ray - Read On

why dont you all just wait for some videos to be released...not that it would likely settle the argument when they are but its certainly better than this

Everyone knows this. But the CELL+RSX is faster graphically then the XENON+XENOS.

Shhh, they dont want to admit that the RSX gives some of its operations to the CELL and is therefore technically quicker. Thats crazy talk to them.

On the topic, and at the guy that asked why they would do this, they didnt have to do anything besides use non-compressed textures. They already had them from the 360 version, but I would assume they had to be compressed for the DVD9, now they just use the Uncompressed versions.

And Gerbx, I would be suprised if this version gets anything lower than what the 360 version got. Especially since it has added modes.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

This space Reserved for the Nuggets of Wisdom dropped by Bladeforce:

"Why post something like this when all it will get is PS3 owners blinded to reality replying? BOTH THE PS3 AND BLUE-RAY WILL NOT LAST 3 YEARS! TECHNOLOGY CHANGED TOO FAST!"

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

Oh Im sorry have screen shots compairing both come out??????????? Oh that right not. Then we have other site including the devs stating that there wont be much diff in graphics. Will there be who knows all this extra dev time should produce at least some diff.
BTW id also said that the 360 had the edge over the ps3 in power while the ps3 had the storage.
Unreal 3 also does look a little better on the 360 look at the screen shots lol.

If bioshock does look better it will be because of the extra dev time not because of blue ray.

No, they did not.  John Carmack said the 360 was better for developers.  He never said more powerful at all, and given thecontext of his full interview it's more logical to interpret his words as meanign that the 360 is easier to develop for.  HIs complaints about the PS3 were not that it was less capable, they were that it takes him and his team longer.  Please learn how to read.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

They are NOT using "uncompressed" textures.

That is technically impossible, do you know how much video memory that would require?

If they *could* use uncompressed textures it would result in a far blurrier image, because the resolution of the textures would have to be incredibly low.

I think what you mean is "less compression".

Compression isn't always a negative, it only becomes a negative when something is compressed beyond a certain level and it becomes noticeable to the human ear\eye etc, in its particular use.

I n response to this ^

"On the topic, and at the guy that asked why they would do this, they didnt have to do anything besides use non-compressed textures. They already had them from the 360 version, but I would assume they had to be compressed for the DVD9"

^ Total and utter bullshit.

There is plenty of room to spare on the Xbox 360 Bioshock DVD9. People talk so much shit...Its the same with MGS4 and the "uncompressed audio"....

There was NO uncompressed audio as in assets (your amp might show a PCM uncompressed signal but this is because the PS3 has decoded the compressed audio).

People don't use "uncompressed....anything" These days, apart from...

Blu-ray movies.

The reason being is that to store stuff uncompressed takes...

1. A lot of space (we'll forget this due to teh pawR of BR!!!!)
2. MASSIVE TRANSFER!!!!

This IS a problem! The BR drive in the PS3 is incredibly slow, to stream textures\audio uncompressed simply would not be possible in a game, without requiring a massive install, and you'd still have the problem that the RSX would not be able to handle the massive size of the textures.

Compressing textures is an industrial standard these days, much like on Digital Cameras...They all use JPEG to compress your pictures...

Do you know how many MB a "10 mega pixel" image would take stored in a standard bitmap format?

Do you know how much space if would take using minimal JPEG compression?

....This thread is silly.

YAY!!! a game dat is better on da PS3 for once!!

Not for once.

  • Dirt - Never played it
  • Burn out Paradise - ever so slightly, was always touted as being PS3 lead platform.
  • GTA4 - Not true, both have their negatives and positives, PS3 has lower resolution, lower frame rate, better textures
  • Oblivion - Not true GOTY edition, update 360s version to be exactly the same
  • DMC4 (slightly) - Not true, PS3 has fake AA, 360 has real AA and a higher resolution.
  • CoD4 (practically nothing, but a very slight amount) - I've never met anyone who could tell

And probably something I am missing. - No thats about it, compared to the 10s of games that do look better and play better on the 360

I've fixed your post for you.

Refix. GOTY edition still renders at the same resolution for Oblivion.

Tease.

Too bad that technologically GTA4 is better on X360. Also DMC4 on X360 is better(it has better textures & AA & so on). And CoD4 is identical on both platforms. You got at least oblivion and burn out paradise right. (Oh, I checked dirt too...)

And for unreal tournament 3, heres some nice pics to compare.

As you can see theres less geometry and lightning in PS3 version. Also some textures are simplified.

Rest of em, http://www.eurogamer.net/gallery.php?game_id=5653&article_id=202623

And dirt...

http://images.eurogamer.net/assets/articles//a/8/7/1/9/7/Dirt7.jpg.jpg

Crappier textures on PS3(lower left).

http://images.eurogamer.net/assets/articles//a/8/7/1/9/7/Dirt10.jpg.jpg

Less geometry on PS3(trees).

DMC4

http://images.eurogamer.net/assets/articles//a/9/4/1/0/2/dmc2.jpg.jpg

Mayday, mayday, we are experiencing some blurriness in jackets collar and also some annoying jaggies on headphones. That must be Xbots new plan to mock PS3!

GTA4

All that scaling stuff hurts my eyes, because I usually play only games that do not upscale(PC).

So... PS3 is better in 2 games out of how many games? :)

Edit/Correction:

COD4

http://images.eurogamer.net/assets/articles//a/8/8/4/7/8/1080p4.jpg.jpg

(Crappy texture alert on PS3, Walkie-talkie, baret, btw that game looks like crap on both consoles. o.O)

Wasn't COD4 shown to have slightly better textures and shadows on the 360 version?

Blu-ray movies are compressed. o.O

If you wouldn't compress those, you could be able to fit only few minutes HD quality video on Blu-ray.

10 megapixels + console talk... -.-
