Good game? Yes.
Good community? Questionable.
System seller? Not a chance.

This is all just hype trying to make you want the game more.

Explain, why its not a system seller. Its new, looks fun, kids can play it, hardcore gamers can play it. Heck, even girls can play it.

I don't see how this can apply to software and console sellers of  GTA IV. Halo, MGS4 since these appeal to alot of the hardcore gamers. If you can attract a more different group, it would sell more yes? Also this should boost up in Japan since they love cute stuff, the sackboys isn't creepy at all.

The idea of system sellers is just stupid.  Yes, there are those rare games like MGS4, SSBB, and Halo 3 that do sell systems but not every good game is a system seller.  If that were true the Gamecube would have outsold everything last generation.

LBP does in fact look like a great game that will capture the casual crowd, but there are a few problems:

  1. Do they know about the game?  Probably no.
  2. Sony is advertising this game on ESPN with sports game, bad idea.  Sports fans don't care about this game.
  3. While the people that scan message boards and game news sites for every bit of information know everything about this game and that it isn't only kiddy, everyone else doesn't.  The PS3 is a super hardcore system and LBP looks too kiddy for most users that don't know any better.  Sadly, that is going to be the majority of users.
  4. People don't like spending $460 for a single game.

the gamecube didn't have GTA 3 GT 4 FFX KH FFXII God Of War Mgs2-3

it didn't have a chance.

as for lbp it all depends of sony its a great game, way better than most of the nintendo milked games wii sports wii fit wii play.

its well known it will sell alot  an move hardware, this one will probably have a good legs, mainly due the online.

Precisely because of that ,it will sell the console to non-playstation demographics.

Exactly, just like Viva Pinata sold tons of 360's to non-xbox demographics...oh wait

Alot of people said the same stuff about the wii, people were laughing and thinking it was a joke, now that its number one in sales. Now the joke is on them right?

oh well whatever, we shall see when the game comes out in October and the results show.

The difference is, even before the Wii launch we had the stampedes and long queues at E3 06 as an indicator and the a couple months before the launch we had the mainstream media talking about it in the news and raising awareness about it while also educating the customers about what it was and why they should want it. Is any of that true for LBP outside of a hardcore elite?

That is LBP's biggest hurdle; the game looks like it will be very good but also very hard to convey to a non-gaming audience which is why it is unlikely to be a system seller and even if it is it would more likely be a small initial spike followed by slightly raised console sales for a long time as the more "casual" gamers hear about it via word of mouth.

Hopefully Sony can deliver on the marketing side because it looks like MM is delivering on the game side.

"I do not suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it"

LBP will have enough trouble moving itself to move consoles.

It may or not be a system seller. The mains problems that this game might have is that :
1. You have no idea what this game is about if you didn't heard about it before
2. Even for those that know, there is a confusion as to what is the real goal of the game
3. That game isn't interesting without online
4. The main demographic of the console isn't necessarily in this kind of games.
5. The sackboys are brilliant

If they want the game to be a success, they need to do a lot of marketing. Ads that explain what the game is about could make up for 1,2 and 4.

other than that i agree with the post. If they could show advertisments explaining the concept idea+ just some cool trailers. I think the game would sell really well. With good reviews and stuff the game will also have long legs.

Sackboys could cause alot of sales to children imo

So how many children will go to their parents asking them to buy a $400-$500 console?

Yeah...personally I think this game will appeal mostly to owners who already have a PS3. And then again some people may not know about it (my friends who own a PS3 don't) or just won't care about it because it's "kiddy."

What does a child care of money?

Eh...my point is the parents would likely say no and it's too expensive, not the child.

True, it won't stop the kids though... and there are plenty of people out there who spoil their kids way too much.

Well...I'm not sure how many parents will buy a $400-$500 console + the game + tax for their kid ;P

You'd be surprised. A lot of people spoil their kids rotten. Probably why a lot of people have entitlement complexes.

My parents likely would of bought me a 400-500 dollar console... though i would of never asked for something that expensive though.

Honestly the effect will likely be masked though... as such purchases likely will mostly happen during birthdays or Christmas.

I would never get expensive stuff like consoles for Christmas, but I know some people that would.  I got a ps2 around 6 months after it came out here in the states (around May 2000), and one of my friends got so jealous that he started begging his parents to buy him new consoles (yes, more than one).  For Christmas, he not only got a ps2, but also the just released GameCube and Xbox.

I have to partially agree with this...

Those things are quite fun from the start... Until you see that it's crap after some time... They're raking in cash for such a glorified game. I don't know what to say but... That's about it.

Well if it sells one system => Systemseller.

Sup guys, I'm a noob to vgc, sorry if I'm was suppose to make a welcome thread or something, I lurk mostly, my background is PC gaming, i had all 3 consoles in the last gen, mostly for my kids an occasional sports games. So I guess I'm what you would call a causal gamer. Because of my job, IT, I have free time to check the interweb and such. To sum it up I've tried to research Little Big Planet, but for the life of me I can't find out WHAT it REALLY is?

So is this a real new person or just a Sony supporter desperate enough to pretend to be a casual gamer who is actually tempted by the PS3's offerings of this game?

I dunno, do you actually think the game could be seen as a mii ripoff, or are you just a Nintendo supporter desperate to undermine the PS3's offerings of this game?

I don't even see how you could come to the above conclusion, the guy said that he had no idea what the game was about, that's one of the points of the LBP doubters.

...

I am going to ask a question -- which may seem really basic.

At its heart, is LBP not really a 2D platformer with outstanding, unique, realistic/fantastic graphics and a level creator?

If this is the case, why would a 2D platformer be a system seller?

I can see this game selling fairly well -- or crashing. But I cannot see it moving a lot fo consoles.

@Mike

I don't see how a game's genre defines it as a system seller or not. Any game with quality and a drawing power to new consumers could be a system seller regardless of its genre.
