Forums - General Discussion - Russia Invades Georgia

It must really suck to be Georgian right now then

Which is why they're trying to get a cease fire now. I think Russia will grant it (while of course pursuing the annexation of not only South Ossetia but also Abkhazia which was not part of the conflict to begin with).

South Ossetia actually wants to be united with North Ossetia that is part of Russia. I'm assuming that they wouldn't mind if newly created republic would be part of Russia (lots of them have accepted Russian passports, some say even up to 90% of population).

They don't want to be part of Georgia and they were de facto an independent country before they were attacked by Georgia but most of the other countries didn't recognize them.

Not even Russia officially recognized them as there own country.  The problem you ignore is the fact that they only want to be part of russia again because of Russia's redisctricting of the area when they took over.

Some interesting developments I've seen recently (more or less in chronological order):

- Georgia offers cease-fire and says they have retreated from Ossetia
- Russia says there are still Georgian forces in Ossetia
- According to UN observers, Abkhazian forces will strike Georgians tomorrow
- Russia says it's ready to negotiate and end the war
- Bomb hits near Tbilisi's civilian airport's runway before the French Foreign minister was scheduled to arrive
- US Ambassador To UN: Russia Seeking Georgia Regime Change

According to the Russian defense ministry, a Georgian military boat was sunk after it made two attempts to attack Russian military ships:

According to the BBC, there's panic in Gori and people are fleeing to the capital:

This is getting better and better...

At least it was before.  Can't imagine what would of happened if they would of screwed up and it happened during.

I hate to say this, but Russia has taken their mask off now... They're advancing on to Gori with tanks and troops now!

Preventing genocide indeed... It's just 80 km away from Tbilisi.

Figures.

I like this

The Bush administration said Sunday that it would seek a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Russian military actions in Georgia.

Does the Bush administration realize Russia is part of the security council?  Are they really going to let themselves be condemned?

• MILITARY SPENDING: Russia's military budget is equivalent to about $40 billion this year, compared to Georgia's $997 million.

• STRENGTH: Russia has 1.1 million soldiers, Georgia has 37,000.

• ARSENALS: The Russian armed forces have about 6,000 tanks and some 1,700 combat aircraft. Georgia has 230 tanks and 12 combat aircraft.

@Kasz216: According to what the media is saying, Russia and USA were going back to Cold War-style language in the UN meeting, maybe that would explain that resolution proposal.
