This is exactly my problem. Random people shouldn't determine whether some lives or dies. Especially after two trained lawyers have tried to convince them. The average person is just way to impressionable.

I think locking them up for life would be better than a death penalty. What if the person charged for killing someone got killed, and was proven innocent in the end.
