Forums - Sony - Will the PS3 get a price cut this year?

Also, do you think that people have already forgotten about MGS4 and GTA4? Thousands of GTA/MGS fans who couldn't afford a PS3/360 outside of holiday season, will be buying a PS3 for MGS4 or a 360/PS3 for GTA4. Just watch massive software increases for GTA4 and MGS4 this holiday season.

SOCOM is pretty big. All of them, i think, have sold about 1.5-3mil.

So called 'PS2 upgrader' - SOCOM: Confrontation. Not a massive seller like Gears or MGS4, but a VERY loyal fanbase. People are still playing SOCOM online on their PS2's. A lot of people will 'upgrade' to PS3 when SOCOM PS3 comes out.

Tekken 6 is also a 'PS2 upgrader', but it isn't such a big deal.

The 360 has nothing compared to last year. Halo 3 came out and still the 360 couldn't outsell the PS3 that holiday season worldwide. All the PS3 had last year was Uncharted, a new IP, and Ratchet and Clank.

LittleBigPlanet is the biggest game this holiday season in terms of 'upgrading' PS2 owners. Just watch it happen

I have to comment on your PS3/360 holiday comparison. The PS3 had just gotten a 200 € price cut in Europe which heavily affected sales. Nothing of that sort will happen this year for either platform.

True. But it was a massive surprise for 99% of VGCHARTZERS to see the PS3 sell as much as the 360 last holiday season. Remember your bet with Just_Ben . People were predicting 6 - 7M sales for the PS3 at the end of 2007. It actually was closer to 9M.

Edit: Didn't we have a bet? I thought it was in your sig, but you have changed it. I have completely forgotten what it was... or am I thinking of the wrong person?

@tombi123: Yep, I was surprised by how well the PS3 sold last holiday... But I was also not expecting such high price cuts right before the holidays. I was expecting something like a 100 € price cut.

But in hindsight, that price cut made sense considering Sony's declarations that I was talking about in the previous page. They wanted to establish their platform nearer to 10 million units which is their threshold for a viable platform.

Here is the source I promised to post when I had the time:

http://seekingalpha.com/article/77322-sony-corp-f4q07-qtr-end-03-31-08-earnings-call-transcript?page=-1

Emphasis mine:

The minimum, I mean, at least over 10 million units has to be sold to create a platform. So therefore fiscal '07 even though that our cost of the hardware is much higher than the price itself, we have to sell close to the 10 million sets in fiscal year '07, but this year, our strategy is that we should focus more Internet-related service operation to increase the... to increase the internet operation, to increase the software rather than drastically increase the quantity by adjusting the prices. If you consider the long life, long lasting lifetime of the PS3, this year we don't think it is a time to aggressively sell the hardware quantity this year. That's our strategy for this fiscal year.

I don't get it people go on about how the 360 has had less price cut's than the PS3 despite the fact that to this day the 360 is actualy cheaper than a PS3 to purchase.

The Price Point is more important than the number of price cuts and to this day the 360 has always been at a lower price point. The reason PS3 sales spike every time there's a price cut is because it's getting nearer to the price point were consumers will desire to buy it in the masses.

It's pretty clear even at a low price point that the consumer isn't as interested in the 360 as they are the PS3 and the Wii.

probably not goin to get 1, but i think dat it definitely needs 1 with da dreadful sales after gaining some momentum.

I hope so .Unlike the 360 ,the PS3 price cuts have managed to give the machine sustainable sales boost(the 360 sales are about the same as last year until june..and august last year saw a price drop).

And Sony needs as soon as possible to get close to that 200-250 price.Even 299 could be enough to increase a lot the sales.

Price cuts are always a good thing for the consumers. Consumers do not care whether it means a loss of money to a greedy corporation.

A $50 price cut in America would be a great thing but PS3 prices would remain the same in Europe they have to subsidise the american price cuts. The american economy is going terribly at the moment with the sub prime mortgages, recession looming and the ongoing war in Iraq.

Greedy corporations don't sell their products to consumers for less than they cost to make so they can be at a fair price. Sony did.

They may have a price cut, but i doubt it, beecause they need to profit.

                             End of 2008 Sales:

               Wii- 39 Million 360- 25Million PS3- 22 Million

                          PSN: papasmurf5721

I still don't see the overwhelming reason for a price cut that you just talked about. Do you think PS3 sales will suffer a lot due to 360's price cut?

Its christmas for christ sake (lol). There will be a pricecut. I don't even see why there is any discussion about this. The PS3 will be two year old and the entry model costs 400$ instead of 500$ (yay). We will have a new SKU with 45nm GPU and there will be a price cut. This is no fanboyism, whishful thinking, guessing or whatever this is simply what will happen and I will wonder if I have a possibility to find this thread again to feed some crow.

A couple of million parents and kids will wander through department stores and will decide between a 360 and a PS3 and do you really think Sony will allow MS to steal the show?
