The game's too strange to know for sure, but I think you're meant to help all of these bizarre Nintendo characters with their various problems and they will eventually help you with your problem. Your problem being that the ratings of your childen's TV show 'Captain Rainbow' have gone down the tubes.
So it looks like some kind of adventure game.

- action and adventure
- adventure is more akin to Animal Crossing
- explore Mimin Island (solve puzzles, help people)
- helping people earns “kirarin”, 20 collected triggers action sequence where you chase after falling stars
- action turns side-scrolling, enemies must be dodged, and the goal is to chase down the falling stars
- dodge evil shadows, or be sucked into a minigame
