Forums - Gaming - Best and worst SRPG?

The only correct answer is Valkyria Chronicles.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Have you played it???
Lol I know you love it but its not out yet.

Im sure whenever the hell I play it I'll be sold too though. I was interested in it since EGM had a small ass little square article on it months ago......maybe a year.

Best: Tactics Ogre, very solid gameplay and still the best story in a SRPG by miles.

Worst: Hoshigami Ruining Blue Earth

Operation Darkenss is worth... but the problem with Hoshigami is that it does a lot of things right and great... but it's all ruined by the insane ass diffuclty curve that goes up in a straight line.

I'd pay someone to beat that game without any grinding. It seems like you need to grind after every level for like 2 hours... because they have the same troops as you do, they outnumber you every battle AND They outlevel you every battle.

Plus it's fire emblem/tactics ogre... they die they're dead for good rules... and anyone new you recruit starts at level 1 and needs to be level grinded.

Oh shit really? Those lousy bastard tutorials in the game made it seem like my Prinnies would have to be replaced if I threw them, so I spent over 200 hours without using that strategy. Ok scratch that then, I didn't mean to spread misinformation.

If you mean the Sacred Stones for Fire Emblem, it doesn't have an overworld, just different locations you can go into on a pretty straight path. You can't actually fight on it.

I know Advance Wars isn't really that RPG-like but so many of these other strategy RPGs really aren't either. If I sat down somebody with Fire Emblem and they loved it, should I recommend them Persona or Advance Wars? I would say that person may get more enjoyment out of Advance Wars, and that's why I think these are really just strategy games, regardless of disposeable or non-disposeable units.

Also note that in most RPGs, your characters aren't purchased, but are acquired as part of the story. In Disgaea, they are purchased in the same way one would puchase a unit in a strategy game. There is just way too much overlapping for me to consider them much more than strategy games with RPG elements, while most mistakenly look at them as RPGs with strategy elements.

Actually monsters can appear on it randomly for you to fight IIRC.

Also, zexen hit the nail on the head with the differences between TBS and sRPG.

1) Unique units vs Generic Units

2) Units which accompany you across missions vs Units which are produced in missions

*I won't say leveling because a lot of TBS games have primitive leveling with ranks or the like.

AW is no more a sRPG than CoD4 is an RPG. Leveling systems are not the only criteria for RPGs IMO.

You could.  Which i loved...but also kidna ruined the game.

On the one hand i loved not being punished for my "Level everyone up equally" tendencies, but on the otherhand it could screw up the difficulty curve.

1st: Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
2nd: Front Mission 3
3rd:?????(Nothing apparently)

Worst: Dynasty Tactics.

Disgaea 2 is not on the list because of the confusing gameplay.

Disgaea is the best SRPG, seconded by either FF: Tactics or Tactics Ogre.

The worst: FF Tactics Advance

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

The best I ever played was FF Tactics.
Now the worst, uh ... I don't think I ever played a bad one. I nearly did when I nearly bought Agarest Senki, but fortunately the demo saved me from buying it (it's still full price, I'll never buy such a game at that price).

So, I'll have to seek far away to find the worst one.
One I never finished, so is not really a bad one, it was even good the little I played it, is Albert Odyssey (I think that's how it's called), on SNES. That will be my worst.

Best: Fire Emblem, by far. Followed by Advance Wars (yes, it counts!)

Worst: FFTA

Best : Fire Emblem series of course, Advance Wars, FF Tactic Advance+2

Worst: Luminous Arc

Or you could just not fight them.  I skipped them wherever possible; I'd rather be progressing the story than fighting "random" battles.

Best is probably Super Robot Wars Original Generation II.

Worst is probably Final Fantasy Tactics.

I knew you are going to say that
