Aren't Titanic and Return of the King when adjusted above 1 Billion Worldwide?

@Sansui, hope you don't mean Transformers...
Though Dark Knight was spectacular.

You're damn right I do. The best summary of Michael Bay I've ever seen was done by South Park during the imaginationland episodes.

General: [to the specialist] Get him out of here. [M. Night Shyalaman is hauled away, only to be replaced by...] Mr. Bay, can you thnk of any idea how to outwit these terrorists?

Michael Bay: I believe I can. We start... by making a big CG building and then we have a meteor go CROSSHH! [makes a diving motion with his left arm] and it, and it's all like CRAAWWWLL [simulates an explosion with his arms] a-and motorcycles burst into flame while they jump over these helicopters, right? [has his right hand go over his left arm like a motorcycle over a helicopter]

General: [firmly] No no! We need ideas how to stop the terrorists!

Michael Bay: An eighteen-wheeler spins out of control and it's all like BROSSHH [makes a crashing motion with his right hand] And then this huuuge tanker full of dyna- [launches into a series of explosions]

General: [fed up] Those aren't ideas, those are special effects!

Michael Bay: I... don't understand the difference.

General: I know you don't. Get him out of here! [next in the chair is Mel Gibson] Aaand being that we are all big Mel Gibson film fans, we thought maybe you could help us.

Transformers, like all other Michael Bay movies, sucked. It didn't suck on the epic level of Pearl Harbor, but it wasn't far off.

I don't know who I would want to kick in the nuts more, Michael Bay or Roland Emmerich. It's a tough call.

=/ And Armaggadon?

Sure its Michael Bay, since hes entertaining the thought of making video games now. That is kinda scary

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Transformers didn't suck. It was what it was suppose to be. A summer popcorn movie that entertained. Obviously when a movie has a hardcore fanbase you are going to have people that dislike it for not being like the cartoon or something but overall it made tons of money and we probably could not of done a better job. And you know the sequel will make even more money than the first one. It's tricky turning a cartoon about transforming robots into something the mainstream audience can accept and enjoy. Dispite popular oppinion we are not more talented than Michael Bay. At least not when it somes to making summer tentpole movies.

Heath ledgers next of kin become very happy (too soon?)

The Titanic is at 600 million made WW and The Dark Knight is at 394+ million in what...two weeks? I'd say The Dark Knight has a clear shot of beating the Titanic. It's also really the only big/huge movie this Summer so it has a clear shot.

If it passes the Titanic then that's crazy :O I wonder if any other movie might pass it. Maybe the third Batman movie?

Titanic made 1.8 billion WW (see boxofficemojo)

The Dark Knight has 600 million worldwide.

Nothing will ever pass Titanic at the WW box office.

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

It doesn't matter, Titanic isn't number 1 when adjusted for inflation. New movies will ALWAYS beat some old record because inflation causes them to look like they are making way more money.

The Dark Knight won't beat Titanic even without adjusting inflation. That just shows you how big of a movie Titanic was. Now it would be interesting to figure out how many tickets Gone of the Wind sold. It must have been crazy.

No, Transformers sucked. The only things tolerable in the movie were Shia LeBouf and Optimus Prime's voice. The dialogue was terrible, the action was mediocre (yay, close ups of giant machines fighting... Look, another silver blur!), and it was 100% Michael Bay crapfest.

I never said I could do a better job, I simply said the movie sucked. Just because it's a "popcorn movie" doesn't mean it should be allowed to get away with subpar performances and a dumb story. Movies like TDK and Iron Man prove that you can mix cheesy ideas and blockbuster action and still make a hugely entertaining movie that doesn't insult your intelligence.

I don't buy into the idea that movies are allowed to suck just because of their budget and target audience.

I doubt everyone shares your oppinion on this one judging by how many people saw the movie. Some movies are meant to make you think like say Control Room. Others are meant to shock like Hostel. And some are just meant to entertain and make buckets of money like Transformers. Guess which one the studios like the most. And I don't think subpar performances and dumb story are always the directors fault though some of the time they are. Let's put it this way. Are you really saying that you expected Tranformers to be this super intelligent oppinion piece with Oscar level acting? I bet you that millions of people will once again buy tickets to see Transformers 2 suck so bad again. I guess sucking might not be such a bad thing for the studios if people keep coming back.

I could have sworn I just mentioned Iron Man and that didn't have any deep intelligence behind it nor did it offer Oscar worthy acting, but everyone seemed to enjoy it none-the-less.

Again, I don't forgive shitty writing, mediocre acting, and a lame plot just because "other people went to go see it". Shit, I went to go see it, too. I contributed to that shitfest.

Just because something is entertaining doesn't mean it has to be lowbrow and poorly executed.

it's got a Looooooooong way to go worldwide:

1. Titanic (1997) $1,835,300,000

39. The Dark Knight (2008) $596,251,065

I'm not even sure it's going to beat Titanic in the USA:

1. Titanic (1997) $600,779,824

8. The Dark Knight (2008) $393,751,065

It took $42 million last week so it's going to take quite a few weeks to get there.
