Forums - Gaming - Sony - We lead, not follow, we don’t want senior citizen gamers, Wii is fad

It is amazing to me how Sony and Nintendo have almost done a complete role reversal over the last 3 years.

It really sounds like somehing Hiroshi would say back in the day.
Nintendo was a pompous comapny back then, and they probably still are...
but from the looks of things, they have softened their PR in the last few years.
They even apologized for their e3 performance. Now that is unheard of.

Regarding the OP
The SONY rep may have "meant" several things, and sure, they can be "spun" several different ways. But he had to have known that going into the interview.
That's the way the world works. Do your best to not sound like a fool.
He failed.

Sometimes its better to just say...
"Nintendo is doing well" and leave it at that.

Predictions For Last Full Week of Sales in 2010)

360 - 43.88 Million

More terrible predictions coming Jan. 2011!!!

The good thing is that they aren't aiming for the senior citizens. That is the market along with females that is destroying our industry right now with their lifestyle and cutesy games.

Rest easy, I don't think the crazy MGS4 fandom industry is in any danger from senor citizens.

I mean Snake will... wait... oh god!  He's one of them!  You're doomed!

Well, they can't say as a company : "The Wii, being a cheaper console by all means, is kicking our arse. We lost billions of dollars with PS3, but we are still on the gO! w00t

BTW, we are 3rd place, 360 is outselling us on a week to week basis and Nintendo seems to be the next PS2. Oh well. Shit happens."

But yeah, they can be very arrogant >

Thanks Sony. Just when some of your statements start to sound "rational" again, you come out with this.

"we’re not trying to get the senior citizen group to get into gaming"

--> We don't like new customers?

"we’re looking to convert the PS2 owners and the tens of millions of installed base that were playing DVDs and playing games on their PS2, to now play Blu-ray movies and Blu-ray games with their PS3."

--> Sorry to have to tell you this, but most of the PS2 'casualz' owners I know have upgraded to a Wii - not a PS3.

As for BluRay movies - we'll consider it, when the cheapest player is less than $700 (AU). Upscaling DVD players can be picked up for around $70AU.

The last remaining thing I need for my living room is 'online movies on-demand' - and its just a question of picking which service I want.

...

If their business model is based on "converting PS2 owners to PS3 owners", they are going to have a REAL hard time this generation :P

I fully understand it's their job to talk positively and spin for their product.  But you can do so without talking down to the competiton and mocking them.  That would be pathetic enough if it weren't for the fact that they are belittling competition that is owning them in sales in all territories.

Look at the other recent Sony PR thread, where some SCEA guy claims that the reason for PS3's 10-year lifecycle is that its graphics are future proof.

My point in bringing this up here? Just to complement your point... If Sony's ignorant PR is any indication of their strategy, they're in for a rude awakening.

For their sake, I hope they're just posturing.

@Soriku: Absolutely... We're at the point that they could hire the most extreme PS3 internet fanboys for their PR team, and we wouldn't see a difference.

He didn't call the Wii a fad, per se, he was talking about the controller. At least that's what the paragraph before it was talking about. Since there was no mention of Wii in the paragraph when he said fad, I'll take it that the second paragraph was siimply a continuation of the first.

Yea, he definetely didn't.

And, as Sony's and MS's stratgety is to get the casual and core gamers of last generation. Other than Buzz!, Singstar, and Scene It! there hasn't been any effort to reach that non-gamer audience. So what he said isn't surprising.

Lastly, what do you think he is going to say about his company?! Tell you what you'd like to hear? NO! They are going to talkly positively about their company and position as every other company in business does and will continue to do.

Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,

@outlawauron: He could have said similar things without sounding so ignorant and unprofessional.

Instead of saying "the Wiimote is a fad" he could have said "Nintendo's controller is proving to be successful for their platform, but it wouldn't necessarily work on ours"

Instead of saying "we don't want the senior citizen group" he could have said "we're happy that Nintendo brought new people to the gaming world, and we intend to take advantage of that, along with our own initiatives for broadening our userbase".

If you're a Sony investor and look at this interview, what will you think? Most likely, you'll assume that SCE's management has gone mad.

No, if you're a Sony investor, you will think "Oh thank goodness Sony has multiple divisions."
