Forums - Nintendo - How should Nintendo use the money? What could be the next step?

Hey guys,

We all know, Nintendo is printing money at the moment. The Wii and the DS are unbelievable money-makers. So I am asking, what could be Nintendos next step. Last Generation, they couldn't afford to create a powerful console like The Xbox 360 or the PS3, so they took a huge risk and won with a completely new console.

Now, Nintendo would be able to create a powerful machine for the next generation, but should they? Don't get me wrong, I am NOT saying, the Wii should be replaced soon! I am asking how the next generation of nintendo should look like in 3-4 years from now.

What should they do with the DS? The DS is selling like hot cakes in North American and Europe, but not that great anymore in Japan. A new Nintendo handheld would be good for japan at the end of 2009 e.g., but it would choke off the demand in Europe and the US, where they could keep on milking the cow for some time.

Furthermore the software sales for the DS are awesome as well. Mario Kart DS, Nintendogs, Super Mario DS and Brain Training are still selling like 70k units each every single week. The latest of those games has been released 115 weeks ago, all of them crossed the 11 million mark. A new handheld would need these IPs, but with a new Version on the market, the sales would decrease significantly.

So do you agree with my arguments? What would you suggest Nintendo to do?

They should create the DS 2.0 and the next Super Wii with better specs than the PSP 2, Xbox 720 and PS4, BUT... $100 cheaper than the competition.

=p

Does the concept of "should" even really apply? It's their money, obtained by honest means, and the most likely course of action is to attempt to repeat the past success: gaming for everyone.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

1.  WRONG - they made money the whole time on gamecube, and their games sell like crazy as well.  So they could have made it like ps3 and 360 if they wanted.  Plus they have their handheld market making them a shit ton of cash as well.  Nintendo is never in need of money.   Of course now they have an insane amount coming in compared to before.

2.  Yes it may not be selling as huge in Japan anymore.  But still quite fairly well.  higher than any console is selling every week, you can't say is bad.  Plus the whole fact how saturated it is over there.  isnt' it something like 1 in 5 people have one.   And plus doesn't a company make most of its money on software.  And the DS is a beast everywhere in software.

1. I read something different. Nintendo couldn't afford a hell of a console. The Gamecube made a profit, but still they were not able to win an arms race against Sony or Microsoft

2. No, PSP sells more than DS these days. And I wrote in late 2009 as a date for a new DS. The sales will be lower at that point.

What the heck are you talking about? In Japan, the PSP outsells the DS every week by only 10k or 15k... but still, the DS outsells the PSP by more than 500k every month worlwide.

Just in June, in USA, with the NPD numbers, the DS sold 783k againts PSP 337k... and thats just USA.

PSP "winning" in Japan by an unsignificant amount doesn't affect the DS in worldwide sales every month. NOT AT ALL.

I was talking about japan, of course!

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Apartments in tokyo. They are expensive. I know love hotels, hehe

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Their next console shouldn't be a Wii 2, but something totally different. Wii owners won't want to upgrade to something that is slightly better and besides, the competition can easily copy the Wiimote. The next DS should come in 2010 at the earliest. In Japan the DS is still selling well just not that well. A new DS in Japan would kill the DS in US/others. Oh, and by the way, the Wii wasn't a risk. If it had gamecube-like sales it would have still made a profit, just a smaller one.
