China set to launch CBHD blue laser disc
Posted on 28/07/08 15:16 by Seán Byrne

China is set to begin volume production of its new HD optical disc format CBHD (China Blue High-definition Disc) in the 4th quarter of this year with Shanghai United Optical Disc being the first manufacturer to set up a production line for the disc format, according to this DigiTimes Systems report.  This new disc format was up until recently known as CH DVD and the new format will initially be targeted at the China Market.

One significant advantage with CBHD is that an existing DVD production line can be refitted to manufacture CBHD discs for just over 1/4 the cost of setting up a BD disc production line (US$800,000 vs. US$3 million).  CBHD also requires significantly lower royalty fees than Blu-ray per licensed player of just 55 Yuan (US$8.10)) per player.

However, one major issue the new Chinese format faces is that it has yet to get backing from the major Hollywood studios, unlike Blu-ray which now has widespread backing.  Entry level Blu-ray disc players have also fallen to US$299 in the US, a fraction of their original cost, which means that the first CBHD players will face serious price competition with Blu-ray players once launched on the China market.

This will end in epic failure...

The Chinese may be able to make them cheaper than br with there low production costs.

It looks like a good idea.

BEIJING, CHINA --The Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center (OMNERC), a laboratory dedicated to optical disc research at Tsinghua University, announced yesterday the CH-DVD (China High Definition DVD), a new generation high definition DVD format developed in collaboration with research institutes and manufacturing enterprises.

The format CH-DVD includes Chinese-owned intellectual property, and is based on HD DVD, the high definition format lead by Toshiba and approved by the DVD Forum. The development of CH-DVD was endorsed by the Chinese government, paving the way for the localization of blue-laser, high-definition DVD in China.

"The emergence of CH-DVD as a high definition format integrating Chinese-owned intellectual property clearly demonstrates that a Chinese optical disc technology is already at the world-class level. In the near future, all related industries in China are expected to make the transition from standard definition DVD to high definition DVD."

In the year to come, China will start broadcasting high definition television programs. In combination with HDTV, the CH-DVD format will provide a high definition optical disc solution. CH-DVD incorporates advanced copy protection that prevents the spread of pirated copies.

Doesn't really mean a thing considering everything is cheap over there.   I can give you 150$ and you can rent a apartement and go to a restaurant everyday in Shanghai/Beijing. Try to do that in Western Europe and NA.

How much will a CH-DVD player cost over there?  30/40$? And only 10-20 foreign movies a year may release in China every year.  I don't see the Chinese citizen go buying some Blu Ray player instead of a CH-DVD......It can fails of course.
