About 5 years ago I became disenfranchised while playing GBA one day, but now I'm re-enfranchised again because of all of the great RPGs these days.

| rocketpig said: This is for the people who have become disenfranchised with the industry lately... I have a few questions for you. - What has happened to the industry that makes you find other hobbies to occupy your time? Im not playing games less, its just that im going through a phase where im not enjoying games like I used to. I haven't been able to engage with as many games in this current generation like I was able to before. Maybe I play too much? Im not sure. I think its the increase in "shallow" content within the industry. I feel a bit frustrated to find some of my favourite games this generation draw me in and then ruin the experience somewhat in the final third of the game. I find many games are "front loaded" to draw you in, but lack the same consistant quality and pacing throughout. It seems to be an issue for me with too much "filler" slowing down the game to give the appearance of value that can be ruinous to a good experience, or a lack of care and attention given to the final stages of a game. Crysis, Bioshock and MGS4 are examples of this for me. - How long has it been going on? I've noticed a marked increase this generation, although I may just be more sensitive to it. - What are a few of your favorite games? This generation. Crysis First 2/3rds, Bioshock (Until Andrew Ryan), Metal Gear Solid Act 1/2, Halo 3/Gears of war - multiplayer, Metroid Prime 3, Condemned 1/2, Lost Odyssey (Far too long though), Ninja Gaiden 2, Genji 2, Dark Kingom, Heavenly Sword, Resident Evil 4 (Wii), Civilization IV, Black Mirror, Fahrenheit, The longest Journey, Mass Effect - What do you want in your "perfect" video game? Innovative controls, story, gameplay length, etc. I want a game which I can interface with easily in terms of controls/layout/graphical style which draws me in with an interesting story that makes me feel that my actions within a game serve a purpose within an open world which gives me room to explore possibilities and designed in a way that I won't flounder and get lost for 2 hours because I don't see a little detail or read a little piece of information. I don't want to "Fall off" the story and find it difficult to get back into the main thread of the story, I hate getting lost! I find I would rather play a game thats "too short" than play a game thats too long and excessively drawn out, so I perfer the game to be no longer than it has to. - What other media do you enjoy? TV, film, literature, etc. If you want to mention some of your favorite books, movies, etc. even better. I like Heroes, Supernatural, Kyle XY, Reaper, Star Trek (LOL), Babylon 5, Terminator the Sarah Conner..., Scrubs, Everybody hates Chris. - How old are you? 23 If your interest in videogames is as high as ever, please disregard this thread. I'm not interested in hearing how much you love everything. Thanks. BTW, I'm being prompted to organize another editorial. That's what this is about. Apparently my GTA IV editorial grew new legs and I guess it's time for me to get off my rump and write something new. Since I missed my opportunity to give a beating to MGS4, I'm going for something different. |
Tease.

I have a few questions for you. - What has happened to the industry that makes you find other hobbies to occupy your time? Well, I still game as much as I used to, but mostly with very specific games (like Brawl) or a game that gets very high reviews. I never used to really care about reviews, but it's ridiculous that the way the industry works now, I feel like I'm getting a bad game if it gets below an 8.5/10, and I can't get that feeling out of my head. Also, while I think Blu-Ray is unnecessary, when I play a big, epic game like Mass Effect, Gears, or GTA, it's always in the back of my mind that it could have been even bigger if it wasn't limited by DVD. - How long has it been going on? Roughly since PS3 and Wii launched. - What are a few of your favorite games? Gears of War, TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, Super Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros, Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil 4, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, Elite Beat Agents - What do you want in your "perfect" video game? Innovative controls, story, gameplay length, etc. It really depends. If we're talking about the perfect multiplayer game, well that already exists--it's called "Super Smash Bros. Brawl". It's just so finely tuned and fun, I can't find any fault with it. With regard to a single-player/coop game, it would have a great cinematic story that doesn't interrupt the finely honed gameplay. More Indigo Prophecy, Breakdown, or Kingdom Hearts than Metal Gear Solid. Gameplaywise, it differs depending on the genre, but it must make me feel like I am there, in the game. Atmosphere is the biggest part of a game for me, along with an interesting gimmick (like Splinter Cell's use of light and darkness, or the amazing physics of Mario Galaxy) - What other media do you enjoy? TV, film, literature, etc. If you want to mention some of your favorite books, movies, etc. even better. I love all types of media. Favourite shows: Family Guy, CSI, the myriad family shows on the Disney channel (too many to name), Futurama Favourite books: Harry Potter, Halo books, Manta's Gift, crime novels Favourite movies: I Am Legend, True Lies, Arthur (1 and 2, best comedy movies ever--seriously, watch them), The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, SW:Episode 3, and all the original trilogy, - How old are you? 18 If your interest in videogames is as high as ever, please disregard this thread. My intrest has dwindled because games have gotten too easy imo.
Too many savepoints.
My interest had been fading for years. Briefly revived by the original COD but was on life support and not expected to live when I went to a friend's house and played WiiSport. Now I'm playing more, enjoying it more and just wish I had more time and Motion Plus was here.

I think the reason I grow more easily tired to games is because of growing up. I have to split my time between work, studying, social contacts, sports and then - games. I'm still psyched about new games... I can't wait to pick up Fatal Frame 4 for instance, or to see what MAG will be on my mates playstation. But I also know that I cannot enjoy it to the fullest, like how I enjoyed BF1942 for a full year on end while I was in high school and had loads of time. It's all about time management for me and haveb't found the right balance.
Games are at fault too at times though. Promising the world and more, and then end up being total pigswill (pun intended.)
- What has happened to the industry that makes you find other hobbies to occupy your time?
In the industry, not so much. But I think the constant need for re-invention and profits and the competition as a whole made the industry more about PR then actual design. False promisses make me more sceptical, thus make me buy less games.
- How long has it been going on?
Hard to pinpoint... I mean, "life like graphics" banter has been going on since the 16-Bit era. But since I'm more time-constraint (say, 4 years ago) I do take more notice.
- What are a few of your favorite games?
Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, Battlefield, Resident Evil 4, Call of Duty 4, Brawl, Medieval 2 total war.
- What do you want in your "perfect" video game? Innovative controls, story, gameplay length, etc.
I want to be immersed. I want to be "in there". And my perfect game has anythign that needs to keep me immersed. Decent graphics, good controls but mostly, a good storyline and awesome music.
- What other media do you enjoy? TV, film, literature, etc. If you want to mention some of your favorite books, movies, etc. even better.
I enjoy movies and series mostly. I used to read but a constant stream of studying books put me off of that for now. Favourite movies would be somewhat along the line of Clockwork orange, Apocalypse now, Boondock Saints, 300, Se7en, fight Club, Lock-Stock two smoking barrels, the Dark Knight. Series would be Dexter, Lost, Heroes, Avatar, Blackadder and House
- How old are you?
22
The Doctor will see you now

I own no current gen consoles but play the Wii often at my friends house and borrow it to beat games from time to time. A big reason I don't own any console is because I'm unemployed (no income).
HD consoles don't get me excited because the graphics don't mean enough to me. That said I'd love to get a $200 360 to play Soul Calibur 4 (huge fan of 2/3).
I watch several television shows and anime series. I listen to music (media?).
I'm 23.
Most of my gaming these days takes place in the indie scene. It's free, filled with creativity, and contains unique experiences not often found on consoles.

- What has happened to the industry that makes you find other hobbies to occupy your time? It feels like I am playing the same exact games year after year. I find myself playing my old PS1/PS2 titles more than anything. It is bad to the point where I own a Gamefly account and I can't be bothered to waste it on PS3/360/Wii games. - How long has it been going on? Almost a month now. Possibly more. - What are a few of your favorite games? Xenogears, SaGa Frontier, Final Fantasy IX, Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VI, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max. - What do you want in your "perfect" video game? Innovative controls, story, gameplay length, etc. Gameplay that actually requires me to think as well as a very strong story. - What other media do you enjoy? TV, film, literature, etc. If you want to mention some of your favorite books, movies, etc. even better. Television (mainly anime and crime drama). Recently forgot about gaming and watched "Naruto" seasons 1-5 within a 4 day period. Good thing I still have a BluRay player and a Netflix account eh? I find myself using this more than my games. - How old are you? 24 |
iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.
Currently playing:
Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Yes and no, but I've been on the busy side. Apparently college and managing your apartment and classes gets on the time consuming side
As I'm getting settled again, I'll probably start blowing through games with Gamefly again as well as playing more on my computer.
Also, with prices increasing, that is something that's killing my interest. I'd much rather spend a little bit of money and rent a game I'd most likely never play again. In a way, it raises my interest in trying out new games, but there goes my money support for the developers of such games. Still, thank god I rented games like Haze (which I beat in one day by the way....).
