You can use an sixaxis if you want. Used it to play chrono trigger on my pc.

I had no problems using my wired 360 controller on my pc w/winxp pro. Should work just fine on Vista as well.

If you have PS2 controllers you can also buy a PS2 to USB controller adapter and you can use them on your pc as well.
