I've never even heard of Braid before EDGE gave it a 9. I heard FF4 was actually good, which made me scratch my head when I saw they gave it a 7, just like Hail to the Chimp.

That's because you only saw the number, not the text, and also you seem to have made some critical errors with your assumptions here.

A. 7 for Edge is actually quite a good review. Average for them is considered 5, and you'd be surprised at the amount of games that are considered great, or AAA, that get 7s from Edge.

B. Hail to the Chimp is actually already one of Edges most controversial reviews ever. Simply because they vastly over-rated the game, according to most.

C. Edge bases their scores on innovation mostly. Therefore remakes are judged more harshly than their originals. A exception is RE4: Wii edition. This game was given a low rating not because the game isn't great on its own merits(or even AAA according to some), it is "great," by popular opinion, but because this is the nearly the 7th release of this game worldwide and the 3rd remake, its score was made to reflect that. I said as much in my original post. Imagine if like Madden 08. They might give the game a 7. However, if Madden 08 was renamed John Madden Football, and magically all the other madden games never existed, and it was the first game in the series, well, the current form of the game, that is really nothing special to longtime Madden fans or Edge magazine, would probably be considered the "best game of all time," by both groups.

Now, I believe you probably already knew most of this, so let me address a couple of things that I was, frankly, a little offended by in your post.

First was your term, "actually good" implying that a score of 7 from Edge means a game is bad, or "not good," and(thought I might be reading a little too deep) that the Edge score was the final word, but I'll get to that in a minute.

You implied that despite what you heard and thought from other reviewers, you couldn't understand why edge disagreed with them.

Edge's word isn't any better than any other review site, and their scoring system is completely different. The least difference being they don't use a decimal system, and instead only score in absolutes from 1 to 10, and the most if which is 5 is actually considered their "average" score. Sometimes they are totally and completely off, like with Hail to the Chimp.

I'm not saying they are completely off in the case of FFIV, as some reviewers decide to judge a game based upon its own merits, while others review it based upon improvements it made to similar games before it, but for future reference, if you heard a lot of people raving over a game and then Edge gives it a 7, that doesn't mean the game wasn't "actually good," or "bad." In actuallity, it probably means the game is great, as 7 from Edge is considered good and of course there is always the great word of mouth and AAA reviews from places like Gametrailers, Gamespot, and the 8.7 from IGN, in this particular case.

Well, anyway, sorry for the text crit. Just had an issue with your phrasing, and thought I'd share some of my Edge knowledge and thoughts with you, lol.

Welp, goodnight my friend. I'm off to bed.
