Also, I hate games that rely heavily on level grinding. I know, how can you be an RPG fan and hate the grind. I just think some games do it better than others. Chrono Cross didn't even have levels and Suikoden allowed other characters to catch up to your main character's level really quickly.

Too bad Lost Odyssey might be a little too depressing for your tastes since it was made so that you didn't need to grind much if at all.  Don't play FFXII since you will need to grind quite excessively at certain points in the game.

I've already played Tales of Symphonia, Star Ocean 3, and Xenosaga. Grandia II is another classic. I shied away from 3 b/c it sounded like there was too much dungeon crawling. Story is really important to me. That's a big reason why I like Suikoden 3,5, Skies, and Chrono Trigger. A common aspect to all those games' stories is that they weren't overly dramatic. Although I like the FF series, one of my complaints has always been that they're almost too depressing too much of the time. Not enough sense of adventure and fun.

Persona sounds intriguing. What about Odin Sphere? I've heard that it's good, but I don't actually know anything about it.

Don't play Lost Odyssey then since it is even more depressing than the FF games. Sense of adventure and fun is good and all but I still like dark and mature stories also but that's just me.

Don't get me wrong. I don't hate a dark or serious story. I've played and really enjoyed just about every FF. I just tend to enjoy a campier atmospher a bit more.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

You might want to try Oblivion either you will hate it or love it...

I didn't mind the grind in FFXII just because the battle system was so good (no random battles, somewhat active, no battle load screens) that I would actually explore every nook and cranny of every dungeon and therefore get in enough encounters that I was always at a high level.

Lost Odyssey just gained points in my book if you're right about the grinding. I just assumed it was "old-school" like Blue Dragon.

Played it for an hour and it was too much of "computer game." i.e. It was way too complicated. Too many buttons, too many menus, too many items, etc. Simplicity is good.

Lost Odyssey is a old-school JRPG at heart but it has a few tweaks both good(ring system, relative lack of excessive grind) and bad(there is a stealth section early on in the game)

Xenogears from PS1. greatest game ever created

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Ok odds are you've played some of these, but I'll try and exclude ones you've mentioned.

FFX and X-2 - You've probably at least played FFX, but even though X-2 wasn't the greatest game, I liked the battle system.
Dragon Quest VIII - Not an active battle system, but a great RPG
Dark Cloud 1/2
Kingdom Hearts 1/2 - Probably played these too
Persona 3: FES - Great game, but also turn based
hell, most SMT games are worth playing as an RPG fan.
Shadow Hearts 1/2
Valkyrie Profile 2 - Sort of active, it is an interesting battle system to say the least.
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter - You can move around, but still turn based
Tales of the Abyss - Great game, and it has an active battle system
Rogue Galaxy - Generic story, but good action based gameplay

I can probably think of more later.  I've never really minded grinding, so I don't really remember how grind intensive these  are.

Yep, there's practically no grinding in LO which makes it fantastic. Also whilst the game is quite like FF, it does have its lighter moments and can be rather amusing at times. I'd personally recommend LO to any RPG fan as I thought it was exceptional.

LO is great but saying it is exception is kind of pushing it
