Forums - Gaming - Can Anyone Suggest an RPG for Me?

Eternal Sonata and Blue Dragon both have "avoidable" encounters but can get a bit repetitive. 360 version out now and discounted... PS3 version coming up soon.

I hate trolls.

This Suikoden fan recommends for PS2:
Persona 3 FES (the best game for the ps2, no random battles, great story, extremely long quest)
Star Ocean Till the End of Time (no random battles, active battle system, great story)
Xenosaga (one of the most complex stories ever, so complex it spans three games, though the battles are turn based and there are random battles)
Radiata Stories (I'm just beggining this, but it has a lot of characters to recruit, more than 170, and a battle system similar to Star Ocean, so far looks good)
Any Suikoden you may have missed (even IV is worth a play)
Rogue Galaxy is worth a look also

If you need a good story in your RPGs, don't play the bolded ones. Especially the latter since it is cliched and filled with plot holes.

I recommened Star Ocean:Till The End of Time

This is a PS1 game, but it is one of the best RPG's of all time. Vagrant Story. Great ATB system.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Fable.

if you have ps2 or ps3 with BC you have access to the best rps ever made. Final Fantasy series, Kingdom heart series, star ocean series,Radiata stories,Persona 3 and alot more.

FINAL FANTASY VIII THE GREATEST GAME EVER

Looking back....some have recommended Persona 3, which I didn't think would go with the active battle system you like, but fuk it. That game is too good to pass up, so I'll recommend even though it's turn based. If it makes it any better, you only have to actually control one guy.

What about PS2 games?

Sure. According to Sony it's still a current system :P

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

I've already played Tales of Symphonia, Star Ocean 3, and Xenosaga. Grandia II is another classic. I shied away from 3 b/c it sounded like there was too much dungeon crawling. Story is really important to me. That's a big reason why I like Suikoden 3,5, Skies, and Chrono Trigger. A common aspect to all those games' stories is that they weren't overly dramatic. Although I like the FF series, one of my complaints has always been that they're almost too depressing too much of the time. Not enough sense of adventure and fun.

Persona sounds intriguing. What about Odin Sphere? I've heard that it's good, but I don't actually know anything about it.

Don't play Lost Odyssey then since it is even more depressing than the FF games.  Sense of adventure and fun is good and all but I still like dark and mature stories also but that's just me.

Also, I hate games that rely heavily on level grinding. I know, how can you be an RPG fan and hate the grind. I just think some games do it better than others. Chrono Cross didn't even have levels and Suikoden allowed other characters to catch up to your main character's level really quickly.
