Forums - Sony - 'PSN will Have a Competitive Edge over Xbox Live'

So far all sony has done is..."Hmm, what features can we copy from xbox live?" Once they introduce 1 feature that is not available on xbox live, you let me know...and I will point out 10 XBL features that are not on PSN.

But how many of those "features" were ripped off PC gaming, and more precisely services like Steam? :P "Ripping" off a standard feature isn't really ripping off at all, it should have been there to start with :P Sony's just getting to the same point MS is at in a much smaller time frame. I think that's what he's trying to say.

XBL released before Steam. Many of the features in Steam came after their counterparts in XBL or they were both being worked on concurrently.

I'm not knocking Steam, it's a great service. But let's not forget that it was almost useless and very buggy for its first 12-18 months. Only recently did it become the powerhouse it is now.

I wouldn't be so quick as to think MS has all that much in the pipeline though :P

3D interface, avatars, and XBL Community beg to differ. Sure, I think the avatars are pretty lame but MS is still working hard on improving XBL and the Dashboard.

I don't see Sony catching up to XBL any time soon. After all, MS is a software company and Sony is a hardware company. MS has a distinct advantage when it comes to this realm.

I would have to disagree. If you think about what the PSN was like even just 8 months ago and what it is today... And they show no signs of letting up the manic pace. Microsoft is not really adding anything revolutionary even with this update that ups the ante that much. I not be very surprised if Live has nothing that is better than the PSN within a year.

Also, as for your comment on M$ being a SW company, they haven't shown anything that would make me believe they are better than Sony at SW programming. (XMB vs. Dashboard? no contest. Also, and I can tell you this from long, hard experience: Windows Vista sucks.)

It's easy to play catch-up. It's a lot harder to push forward into unknown territory.

And you don't think XBL Community is a huge leap forward for the service? I sure do. Even if 99% of the games suck (and they surely will), there are going to be gems along with the shit. And those gems are going to be very cheap or free.

Show me another service opening up their standards and hardware platform to the public like that.

And as much as you may hate Vista, show me a piece of Sony software before PSN that didn't suck balls. Every piece of software I used by the company was a steaming pile of shit.

Sony Vegas is apparantly quite good. And I used a Sony sound-editing application once, seemed to do the jobs well. Also, I believe they've developed and published quite a few high quality games in the past 15 years.

Obviously they make good games. I'm talking about non-game software (like PSN). I used a fair amount of their camera, music, and phone software over the years and it was all crap. Every last bit of it.

This thread is bullshit, Skeeuk why do you keep posting these quotes from people that are paid by Sony? Its just PR talk and doesn't mean anything at all.

Their comment about how 2.40 came out and now look how fast their working because we're already up to 2.42 is just such a twatty thing for Sony to say, considering 2.41 was just a fix to make sure that 2.40 didn't break anymore PS3s.

Seriously. Its mind numingly boring these threads and just clutters the front page.

I can't belive you have so much faith in microsoft, take this above statement that you made, and apply it to the friggin 360 you support so dearly, they're CURRENT MODELS still have 8%> failure rate!!!! Are you kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!

@Rocket, I know I know, I was taking my pot-shot at Microsoft for they're BS strategies with they're operating systems :P They could have taken they're heaps of money and offered us the future we only saw in movies, but they seem to put just enough to get people to buy it, not spades and then some. I just think, if people keep comming to they're service day by day, and paying no less! That they have little reason to flesh out they're offerings further. I'm just being harsh on MS :P

Where did I mention Microsoft, I was making the point that although the press release says "look how much work we've done EVEN SINCE 2.40"....They've done jack shit. I'm not trolling I picking apart joke of a press release or whatever its supposed to be.

What has that got to do with microsoft? I'd do exactly the same if someone posted such gibberish for any company.

The 360 has an atrocious failiure rate, I don't disagree with that at all. I hate the fruity MS dashboard, I've got no problem calling a spade a spade. I'm calling that sony statement a complete pr piss take.

What exactly are the differences between 2.40 and 2.42 firmware on the PS3?

Steam is cool but comparing a PC service to a console service is completely different.

For example...integrating msn messenger in to xbox live is something Steam doesn't have to do as its on a pc which already has msn.

Having streaming movies and downloadable movies...again, Steam doesn't do this cause it doesn't have to since PC's do this out of the box. Consoles dont.

Actually i think they surpassed microsoft. The XMB is far superior to the Dashboard which is why microsoft is making the so called "3d interface" which basically is XMB from a more frontal view.

Merely fixing mistakes :P They pushed a product out and didn't work out all the bugs. I don't commend them for it, but they remedied any situation pretty fast. I'm just saying MS wishes they're hardware probs were so easy. Sorry for lashing :)

@Disolotude, you have some good points, but as Rocket mentioned earlier, playing catch-up is much easier than paving. Microsoft has a blueprint sitting there for what they're "networking" should be all about. I'm actually admiring XNA and Home for trying to bring something else to the table. XNA for more creative ideas, and Home for a social interface for the playstation brand, not a game in itself, but a way to take your games and make them more social.

From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.

Well, every time I see the PSN take strides, like the new XMB and movies and the store revamp, XBL announces stuff to stay a step ahead. Other than "free" I don't know how they are going to surpass them. They might catch up, but XBL will just steal whatever new feature comes up and make their own version. And so far MS has been more efficient in implementing big changes because they've spent so many years laying the groundwork.

PS3 doesn't need to be better than XBL. It needs to stay free and then be competitive with XBL. That will be advantage enough, I would say.

But who knows? When Home finally (maybe?) gets released and every game has the Home Base (i.e. Wahawk/Uncharted/etc.) and every game has trophies and whatever else they are planning, then maybe they WILL be better. But Sony hasn't yet lived up to its promise as far as online goes. I hope they get there, though.

Can't we all just get along and play our games in peace?

Personally, I don't care for the XMB. It looks pretty but finding the options I want is more work than it needs to be. I also don't like the text setup unless you keep the background all black. I find myself squinting to read something over a photo background, something that shouldn't be happening when you're sitting 10' from a 50" television set. Both have their flaws but from a pure functionality standpoint, I prefer the Dashboard. We'll see how the new interface works once it's released.

As for the 3D interface in XBL, I think that's simply a solution for the myriad of features added to XBL since 2005 and an attempt to de-clutter the interface. I don't think it has much to do with Sony or XMB.

@ rocketpig

I agree, though to be fair, lots of the themes and colors for the 360 blades - especially within the guide - are really hard to read text on.
