Forums - Sony - Killzone 2 - Impressive example of AI

That only looks like a part of a video. Does anyone know where the whole thing is?

Around the Network

It looks like they are using Parametric Skeletal Animation and Procedural Motion Warping to get the character animations combined with some extremely simple checks to see how good the cover is for a given entity. It either improves cover, finds new cover, or keeps the current cover.

It's very cool stuff but its not unique.

I would not judge a game, any game, based on a single level or area (I haven't watched the video but I assume that's what it is).

If this is just one area, I'll say that it's a scripted sequence and because the cover is destructible, they are programmed to "crouch lower". It'd be interesting if over 100 playthroughs they did something different at least once, that'd be intelligent AI. That's why I like gears 1 so much, if you play differently a second time around, you get a different result.

Also, one area doesn't define a game, from the majority of what I've seen of KZ2, there's a whole lot of scripted sequences that don't feel scripted (kudos to the team for pulling that off), but at the same time I've rarely seen the player get hurt in any of the videos.

Wow, that's a lot to write when you don't watch the video. It's not a level at all, it's a tech demo. It's one enemy out in an open area, with three pieces of cover. The person destroys  parts of the cover, and the one enemy reacts to it. WHen the cover is gone, the guy moves to new cover. I would assume this means most all enemies in the game will have this AI. It also means if you destroy different parts of the map in a second play though, they will fight you differently.

it's not a huge deal, but it's still a nice thing (and I know of no other game at the moment doing this well). To look at it and say anything negative, is just mindless bashing. It from people who want the game to suck.

i love that and can't wait for this amazing game

@Cal4m1ty,

Yeah you need to watch the video if you're going to comment, its not long and then you would have all the facts.  I don't think it is scripted at all, from the way they demoed it to the way it looked it definitely appears dynamic.

@TheRealMafoo,

I actually think its more impressive than the graphics tbh, and that is not meant at all as a bash on the graphics.  I just think graphics are at "good enough" levels in games and prefer to see AI improvements as I feel there is far more to be gained there right now.  Still though, like I said this particular feature isn't unique, but its certainly not widespread either.  I would name the game I'm referring to but I'm pretty sure KZ2 fans are tired of hearing that name.  Honestly though I think KZ2 does this better than..the "other" game, it certainly appears that way at least.  I'll let you know after I've played it =)

What "other" game is that? I'm curious...

That's no great AI feat but its awesome and astonishing attention to detail nonetheless.

I second this.. It's not that impressive because it needs not only that. But I do find it interesting that they react on their cover.

Well we haven´t see many destructible enviroments so we can´t say it´s unique but we can say is a nice addition...

By me:

Made with Blender + LuxRender
"Since you can´t understand ... there is no point to taking you seriously."

Heres an example - Enemy fiend stands up, throws a grenade and then returns to cover. He then leans out from cover so he can fire at you when you're forced to avoid the blast.

:)

Tease.

Interesting AI demo, but the bad guy does stand still long enough in between his moments of "AI" to be cannon fodder. It's nice to see them trying to make things more realistic, though, as an awful lot of shooters just keep pumping out the cannon fodder that show no signs of self-preservation.

I hate trolls.

If you think about it too much, that would seem like good AI, but in actual fact, its just a simple, throw grenade and then fire at you.

Another example in K2 is when you appear round a corner holding a rocket launcher and watching an enemy turn and run and hide from the rocket....nice!!!
