Forums - Website Topics - PS3 14.48 last week and now 14.47... DON'T UNDERSTAND...?

I'am a Xbox360 owner and I follow total amount hardware sales mainly for PS3 and xbox 360. Last week I saw PS3 total sales at 14.48 millions and this and for a reason that I don't know yet total sales fells to 14.47 millions. Can someone please explain me this because I don't really understand and I starting to loose some confident in your data.

We were a little bit high on PS3 in lieu of Sony announcing it had sold 14.41m PS3s to retailers worldwide through June 30, 2008, since sales of consoles to gamers lag behind sales of consoles to retailers.

1 million people gave them back.

I would have more confidence if i were you.  NPD was higher on PS3s then we are(if i remember right)... yet you won't see them make retractions.

It just means that they will short it in the coming months.  Unless they were higher on it earlier this year because they were off at some other time, which is what I thought in Feb./March.

it`s not a multiplatform, because the game is NOT possible at THIS quality on any other platform." (Posted on 7/13/08)

Revisions were made to the data for the reasons TheSource described.

In short VGC estimates sold to consumer and Sony tracks sold to retailers (See the animation in my signature for a better explanation). When Sony releases quarterly information it is examined to see if adjustments need to be made. The PS3 sold roughly 2.5m consoles during the quarter and and the correction was for about ~100k. So it was a small correction.

Essentially VGC estimated the quarterly sales to within ~4%, that is a sound estimation by any standard. But that doesn't mean we ignore the hard numbers Sony provides. It still makes perfect sense to adjust numbers to be as close as possible when better data becomes available.

Eh, I would never trust a company who adjusts it's data just to make it seem like they were right all year rather then offer a simple and honest "my bad".

It's just bad buisness... every statistics person i know would consider that unethical.

Well of course not, since they only do US data worldwide shipped figures won't effect their numbers much and it could really turn out that US sales #s are tracked low and European #'s are high.

Seems unlikely.  Though the reports are more broken up and random the numbers do seem to match up with the different tracking numbers in Europe.

What's wrong with being accurate? I think it's quite humble of VGChartz to admit their mistake. I love that good folk at VGChartz aren't burdened with illogical egos.
