I assume he has to be online. Or atleast I see people using that often as a sign that the site is being worked on in one fashion or another.

He can probably do it either way. They use some type of Web2.0 admin tool and he can probably set it so he can appear on or off.  (Edit: He probably also has a set of back office only log ins.)

I imagine he could be either, but I doubt he is bothered about hiding himself so it's likely he is online whenever he does... I bet he has 1 screen updating the numbers, and another with VGC logged on to check that they haven't messed up.
