FTFA:
Thirty dollars for a Blu-ray movie that you can watch over and over again is still a great value,” she commented.

Funny to read that in an article posted about BR vs. DVD...

Oh, so now its a war between Blu-Ray and DVD? I swear you people can't be happy unless you're convinced you're competiting against something.

well your right its the truth..... i dont no what kind of world you live in but every electronic is "Competiting against Something". that what makes it interesting and also people excatly one year ago on this very site thought that blu-ray would fail... when in fact its moving faster then ever.

So i like to point things like that out.

welcome to the capitalist society???

Where everything is in a competition with another, to quote the famous quote by Herbert Spencer (inspired by Darwin), "Survival of the Fittest"

Oh, look who is comming to the defense of this thread, what a surprise. Never would have expected you to defend Blu-Ray.

But you see, this isn't just Blu-Ray vs DVD, its Blu-Ray vs VHS. It's an all out three way brawl! ONLY ONE FORMAT WILL WIN! Do you taste the blood of DVD, eh Blu-Ray? Don't rule out Analoge yet, VHS still has some old-school fists! Oh the humanity of technology, surely this is what Darwin spoke of when he came up with his theory of evolution. We stand at a precipice of a monumental battle. Will DVD destroy Blu-Ray or vice versa, this is such a vicious conflict and the two are so obviously aiming to destroy the other! I predict when blu-Ray becomes strong enough it will cut out DVD playability just to finish off the stragler format once and for all! This is so brutal!

First of all, is that percentage based on revenue or unit sales?

Second, does that 8% statistic refer to the same thing as the statistics in this thread? If so, that's quite misleading. They're taking the top selling Blu-Ray movies and calculating the percentages of those movies. I don't think I have to explain why those statistics are misleading...

if more people are buying new releases on Blu-ray and less people are buying them on DVD then its not misleading.... people are buying BD thats what its about. DVD been out forever of you have to only count NEW releases or it makes no sense. Its about BD GROWTH over last year which was what 200%?

Thats what you should be taking from this. BD will be the next media thats pretty much a given at this point.

Where did I say anyhing about new releases? I said "top selling Blu-Ray movies", not "top selling movies". If that's how they're calculating this percentage, it's like me taking the top selling 360 multiplat games and then claiming the 360 has a huge advantage over the PS3.

But again, I'm not sure exactly how these statistics work since I don't care much about the format war.

Also, $200M becomes about 6.6-8 million sales (based on prices between $25-30 USD) this year.

The article says that this is approximately 300% last year's sales at this point, making last year's approximately 66M, for a total growth of approximately $134M this year.

This info coupled with the article I kept quoting last time this topic came up, gives us a better state of the industry:

We now know that of the US$6.87 billion for DVD + BR, BR accounts for $200 million, making DVD sales account for US$6.67 billion for the first half of this year.

In other words, BR is approximately 2.9% of the industry's revenue; not as impressive as 8-10%, but more impressive than I was expecting (I was expecting closer to 2.2-2.3%)

In terms of unit sales, I will work the numbers at both $25 and $30, and the true value will be somewhere in between there.

Assuming 6.6M sales ($30 BRs):
DVD sales = 405.7M at an average price of $16.44

Assuming 8M sales: ($25 BRs):
DVD sales = 404.3M at an average price of $16.49

So, likely, DVD sales are somewhere around 405M at an average price of $16.46
This would make BR sales somewhere around 7.3M, or around 1.8% of unit sales.

BR prices have come down quite a bit. Plus there're always good deals online. I typically get my BR movies for under $20.

NJ5, you're correct. They always only report the number in terms of the top X BR movies compared to DVD.  You have to do analysis (like my post below yours) to try and get the real numbers, and even then it is imperfect at best.

IMHO Downloads where never a problem and wont be for at least another 10 years. DVDs are the problem for Blu-ray to take over and it seems it is happening slowly but surely. I guess for sony's sake it was smart to put blu-ray in the PS3.

I was always happy with Sony's decision to put Blu Ray into the PS3. It deffinitly hurt their pricepoint and possibly fanbase, but at the same time it defeated the HD DVD camp.

After watching a few movies in HD and in SD I have to say, in many cases, there isn't much of an improvement. I'm certainly not going to rebuy more than a few Blu-Ray versions of DVDs that I own. I certainly won't be buying any new Blu-Ray movies until they are much cheaper. I know that new DVDs come out at $20, but many new DVDs I don't buy. I buy stuff that has been out for a while and runs about $10 or less. The Blu-Ray versions stay up there in price.

I give this thread a 9.6.
