I agree with most of the above. a liitle spike, then back to normal. the game will sell well though, but definitely to most of the people who bought the original.

This holiday season will be very different, as now the PS3 has games too. Gonna be interesting to watch.

should be interesting this holiday season, im expecting ps3 to do huge numbers!!

Lets just wait and see, personally I think it will but not more than 50k extra consoles.

Sales predictions end of 08' (2008-7-27)

  • PS3: 20. million
  • X360: 23. million
  • WII: 40. million

PS3 to surpass X360 WW sales by Q2 2009

A small amount maybe, but resistance will move more hardware for the ps3.

Two words: Halo 2.

I say American sales upon its launch could anywhere from 100-125k. Perhaps a bit more if the hype is really large and the reviews are good. However, I don't think the hardware bump will be spread out through the entire holiday season like Halo 3 or the previous Gears of War.

Halo 2 launched:

1) On a console that cost $150

2) During the holidays

Those two factors were far more responsible for the increase in hardware sales, and even then, it only lasted a few weeks.

Halo 3 also launched right before the holidays and right after a price cut.

Gears Of War appears to have moved large amounts of hardware, but it, too, was released during the holidays.

There are indeed games that move hardware, but not in the way that so many people on internet forums and gaming websites would suggest. There simply aren't that many people who are willing to buy a console just for one game, especially when the console is above mass market price point.

1. If price was a factor, the 360 wouldn't be selling faster than the Xbox at double or more the price.

2. Same thing with Gears of War 2. In fact, I think Halo 2 launched in October instead of Gears of War 2 which will launch in November (if memory serves).

And who says that people will buy the 360 just for Gears of War 2? Hell, maybe the person has wanted the 360 for months but just needed the proper motivation. If people bought the 360 for just one or two games, than it would have a poor attach rate like the Xbox did, but that's clearly not the case.

Your argument seems to be that GoW and Halo 2 only moved consoles because they launched before the holiday season, but the same could be said for Gears of War (what, do you think it's going to be released last thursday?).

This right here.  There were lots of games for the 360 that I would have bought last summer if I'd had a console like the original Gears, Dead Rising, Bioshock, etc...  but it was Halo 3 that was the tipping point for me.  There may well be a sizable group of people who played Gears 1 with a friend for whom Gears 2 will be that tipping point.

I don't think so, many core gamers will wait for it to become available on the PC.

My argument is that it was the holiday season itself that moved the consoles and not Gears or Halo(at least not to the extent that so many people on this site and other gaming/tech sites would suggest). GTAIV caused a hardware spike that lasted all of two weeks before returning to the status quo. Had Gears or Halo launched in April, May, or June, then the same thing would have probably happened.

Consoles owned: Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS, PS3

I'm going to say no as it's likely buyers would be the ones who bought GoW1.

With the right ad campaign, and the right in game footage, this game may have a seriously positive effect. My cousin (who bought a PS3 in January despite owing me $300 since last year) says Gears 2 is the only reason he'd buy a 360 (he's still not buying one). The game is well known outside of the 360 owning crowd. Marketing + 360 price cut could go a long way.

Gears 2 + New 60gb 360 + Holiday season = System Seller.
